Hitting a wall with horse's weight gain
So first let me state that this particular mare that I am talking about is the one and only horse that I board for a friend. She is extremely busy and doesn't have a lot of time to spend with the horse right now. I sold her this horse about 6 years ago and feel obligated to help how I can since she is what I call a "VERY GREEN horse person".
The horse, Lilly, will be 7 this June and came to me from a boarding facility very underweight, greasy nasty hair, no muscle tone, etc. She wasn't emaciated by any means, but a underweight horse in any sense is unacceptable to me.
Well Lilly's owner is very adamant about not putting her on something that will make her "crazy" and she isn't even sure about graining her or anything. So I put her on SafeChoice original, that's what I feel my barrel horse and we haven't had a high strung crazy horse from it lol. Well I decided to add some beet pulp to Lilly's safechoice feeding at night along with a couple cap fulls of Vegi Oil. Her poor gut was a mess when we just switched her to alfalfa when she came so we gradually started her on all of this. She shed out a lot of the nasty greasy hair and started to slick out some. Well my landlord is a very competitive team roper and his header is a Nutrena rep and suggested to put her on Empower Boost. So I have and we are just about through the bag of feed and I simply cannot afford another one for this mare. She stopped gaining weight and is just kind of stagnant now. Her teeth are fine and were done when she first came.
Needless to say I am at a complete loss with what to attempt next. Lilly's owner will pay for the feed but she lives about an hour away and the funds just aren't there to fork out for this horse and wait a month to receive the money... I have my own horses that need to be taken care of.
I wanted to put Lilly on a senior feed with some weight builder, as that has worked wonders in the past for me, but her owner says no way to senior feed.
Sooo, I am going to try beet pulp with SafeChoice again and up the vegi oil I suppose.
Any suggestions out there??
EDIT: I forgot to add, we wormed Lilly with Quest 30 days ago and will be worming her again this week.
