Am I feeding the right stuff?
Hi guys, I have a problem with my 14 yr old thoroughbred gelding. When I bought him 18 months ago, he was very skinny. I was using copra, speedibeat and hay to bring his weight up, but a year later I decided to change diet as he just wasn't gaining enough weight. Now I feed this twice a day:
Half a scoop of full fat soymeal
1 scoop oats
1 scoop lucerne chaff
Half a scoop dry cracked lupins (which are then soaked)
And unlimited hay.
I put him on this diet about 3 months ago and he is slowly improving. However, I went to buy food the other day and they were out of both full fat soymeal and cracked lupins. I went to 3 other stores in the area, everyone was sold out. One of the lovely staff members took a long time calling suppliers, trying to find someone in the area, but there was nothing. She then suggested using copra instead of soymeal and barley instead of cracked lupins. She said they were both excellent for weight gain. The horse seems to love both (but then again, he loves any food lol) and it ended up cheaper than usual.
My question is... It's been about 3 months since I have seen any improvement with him. Is it time to start experimenting with something else? Or stick with what I'm feeding?
