HHhhmmm What Suppliments to get???
During the show season (and off season) I have D on various suppliments. When It's summer I have him on electroyles, joint suppliment, grain, and sometimes all in one feed. I was also thinking of maybe getting him some type of all-round minerals? He's got good strong feet and my shower has never suggested any type of hoof suppliments so I think I am good there. My main question is what YOU think would be a good joint support suppliment? I grew up with my trainer always giving the Next Level Joint Fluid
Next Level® Equine Joint Fluid from SmartPak Equine
Then Missing Link:
Missing Link Plus with Glucosamine from SmartPak Equine
then some electrolyte:
Apple Elite Electrolyte from SmartPak Equine
Something for coat and skin:
(honestly I don't really notice a difference in his coat weather I am using show glo or not, I was thinking of trying flaxseed as my friends horse is on it and WHAT A COAT!)
Does anyone have any suppliments they would recomend(SP)??
Here is a little more info on D incase maybe there is something I am not thinking of?? He's not on any suppliments as of right now because I ran out and just haven't gone to buy anymore.

SmartPak is really good at consulting, along with advice from your vet. I currently have both of my horses on SmartMSM, CoolCalories and Hoof & Health.
Less is more when it comes to supplements.
For joints I have had great luck with Acti-Flex 4000. It's a liquid that's very potent. For maintanence, you can use 1/2 dose. Big D's has the best price on it.
For everything else, I get a custom blend from horsetech.com. Their flax base is one of the best out there and works very well for coat and hooves. Mine is a vit/min blend in their NutraFlax with extra magnesium for my "easy keeper" and moody mare. If you're not sure what kind of blend you need, they have a vit/min pre-done that you can have blended with 1-2 oz of the NutraFlax. I use 2 oz as my horses don't have a lot of grazing (provides good Omega 3's that are missing in hay).
They can also blend in joint supplements too, for an all-in-one product. I don't have all of mind on joint supplements, so I go with separate products.
To encourage my horses to drink water, improve skin and hoof health, and keep my boys "clean", I use 1/2 cup of Apple Cider Vinegar. It works well and I don't have to feed electrolytes. I get the cheap ACV from walmart, $3.78 a gallon.
Hey, thnx so much. Very informative :D
Luvs ~ you put the AVC in their water buckets? I haven't heard of that before. Is that kind of like cranberry juice for people?
I also agree on the less is more type thing. When it comes to multivitamins, etc, if you're feeding grain or pelleted feed check the ingredients list. A lot of horse feeds are fortified so you don't want to give them double doses.
Agree with Luvstoride and JumpingTheMoon on the "less is more approach". There are a couple of vitamins/minerals that can cause serious problems in your horse if you go over the required amount, so if you're using 5 different supplements + grain + hay you could very well be double or triple dosing your horse on several different vitamins/minerals/meds/etc. Talk to your vet specifically about what's in the supplements and if she can't help you ask her for someone who can.
Save yourself the money and just get the joint supplement.. I like smartflex senior.. I felt it was the best value and had good bits of everything in it. The only thing I don't like is that its a powder I wish it came in pellet. BUT it does smell realllly good. yum! For coats I stick to good ol' vegetable oil.. especially when it comes to powdered supplements.
Check your hay and your feed. If there is something lacking in your area, please supply it. Over supplementing CAN cause issues as some of the items cannot be readily eliminated from the body.
