I'm back up in the saddle!
Iíve hummed and harred about posting this, but Iíve decided to share it here.
Iíll try not to write too much of a novel, haha.
Some of you know I fell off my mare earlier this year in March, in a freak accident. I shattered my right leg, and ended up with a metal rod in my tibua, and the fibula was simply braced to heal on its own. Unfortunately I have a bad ongoing knee problem in the same leg, so the healing process has been incredibly slow, more importantly, exercise has been almost forbidden until recently, as every time I tried Iíd end up with my leg giving way and me on the floor. Itís been an incredibly LONG eight months, and it hasnít done any favours to my opinion on riding again. Iím naturally a nervous rider, but there was one point where I thought Iíd never ride horses again.
Recently, with the sudden mobility Iím gaining, Iíve had the need to prove to myself Iím still a rider. I became determined to sit up on my mare again, namely because she was the one I fell off, but also because my gelding is 16.1hh and a mammoth to attempt to hop on atm! Unfortunately, Honeyís been a paddock puff and with my extra weight gain from lack of moving much, the girth wonít get to itís usual tightness and the saddle is slipping in my attempts. Iíve continued to try, but decided Iíd wait a little longer.
An opportunity came about a couple of weeks ago to go see my old mare April. She was my ďcan do anything onĒ mount when I owned her, so I trust her completely. Itís not that I donít trust Honey, but I guess April seems ďsaferĒ I guess. Anyway in the spur of the moment, and with a taller mounting block, I sat up on a horse for the first time in eight months! I couldnít stop grinning. Every paranoid thought of me not wanting to ride again disappeared. Sure Iím still nervous as about falling off again (it wasnít my first fall, but my most disastrous), but I know itís something I wish to continue. Last Thursday I went out again and had my first walkies. It was only for about 5-8mins as the saddle wasnít mine and it was a killer on the legÖ but it was totally worth it.
So without too much more hassle, here are the photos and things to not take into account haha.
- Saddle doesnít fit me at all, Iím aware of it. I ride in a larger, dressage saddle normally, so riding in the small GP was odd. Plus the stirrups were ridiculously uneven (the owner of the saddle needs to swap her leathers over cos sheís stretched the mounting side a bunch). It was for such a brief time that there was no point fixing it, and Iíll know next time to take my own saddle along haha.
- Please donít kill me for riding in sneakers. My boot had to be cut off me in the accident and so I donít have any riding boots atm. Theyíre on my Christmas wish list though haha!
Me and April on the first time I saw her.
My fav <3
The gorgeous Miss April.
Thank you to the people who made it to the end of this novel, and I hope those who have gone through similar moments can share my excitement on how amazing it is to be back up in the saddle! Iím determined to try getting up on Honey this Friday, so watch this space!!!!
well done for getting back on the horse!!
Congrats :) I am/was in the same position as you. It felt amazing being back on a horse for the first time (I was out of riding for over a year). Keep us updated :)
Congrats me dear. It can be hard sometimes to get back into things but good for you for taking the courage. Give yourself a big pat on the back :-)
Congrats!! Just wanted to say how proud I am of you for getting back on and having fun!
Just wanted to add.... I am in love with that halter! O.O
Good job! Glad you are back in the saddle. I had a fall that broke my back and didn't ride for almost 10 years because of it. But I started again this past year and am really loving it.
Once horses and riding gets in your blood, it's really hard to let go of it. Keep on riding!
That is so great to hear and very inspirational! Good luck on your recovery!
I managed to easily swing up into the saddle of my mare Honey on friday. It's amazing because I was struggling so much and then suddenly after April I could do it so easily! Even though it was amazing to be on April, being on Honey again was everything. She was so happy. So excited to be a "ridies horse" again. In fact yesterday when I arrived she looked for the saddle, but I didn't have it so she just followed me everywhere, nagging me for a "big girl's job" or something. Lunging her seemed to make her happy. I haven't got the pics on me atm cos I'm at uni... and I did chicken out a bit and got my friend to lead me around - my mare hasn't been ridden since March you might as well say! But by the end of my 10min ride, I could have easily plodded around on her myself. I think I'm back in business! Now its off to get some riding boots so I can really get back into it!!
Will post pics next time I'm on... thanks for all the kind messages! Oh and i know, that halter is gorgeous... I asked Sophie where she got it, and went to see if I could get a different coloured one - all sold out! Darn it.
