Has anyone ever dealt with this? One testicle is completely retained. What have you done and why? And I wanted to clarify that I know its genetic and passed on to male offspring. So you dont use them for breeding. Thank you

How old is he? Yes a retained testicle can sometimes be due to genetics. I'd talk to a vet that specalizes in breeding/reproduction to weigh the pros and cons of using him for breeding. Usually, assuming he is a mature stallion, it requires surgery to correct the problem.

He is just turning 2. I do not want to breed him, but that is interesting to know. I am also wondering how risky the surgery is? I called a few vets, and they were saying how if its fully retained, they have to go in through the abdomen, and well, I have handled stallions before, and if its somewhat risky to have him gelded due to this, I may not. Thank you

yes, we had a stud colt do this... i can't remeber wat they called it. anyway, you can get a hormone shot that may work, it may just fall on its own... we sold the colt, and keep in touch with the owner... the other one finally dropped after a little "fun" with their mare....

I have never dealt with this but a friend of mine did. Her horse was never "all there" and she was told this was due to the fact that both testicles had not dropped. She rode him and he showed but was unpredictable. Just out of curiosity what is his temperament like? My friend had her horse cut and I want to say that she told me they went in from the underside of his leg (I hope that makes sense to everyone). :)
