Just wondering what are your guys thoughts about breeding mares that have navicular disease?
I have heard that it is both bad for the dam and the foal but I am not sure on this.
Is it hereditary?
Is ist bad for the mare to have that added weight on her hooves during pregnancy?
Will it permanently cause damage to the mare?
I would never breed a mare with navicular. The extra weight can not only make it worse, it could cripple her so badly she would have to be put down. The extra weight would be torture for her. Please don't do it. :(
Not only could it be an extremely unpleasant experience for the mare, probably making her condition much worse, but I'd be concerned that whatever caused the onset of navicular in the mare could party be due to hereditary conformation faults.
In a Word..
I wouldn't do it. Navicular is very painful, and the last thing a mare needs is is more weight on her feet. Navicular doesn't just happen out of the blue, and I wouldn't want to pass on a conformational problem to a foal.
I would say yes but first you need to fix the problem of navicular.
Im one of those people who know that it can be cured with proper hoof care. And no its not hereditary so she not going to pass it on to the foal.
I say you can because I have seen many horse freed from navicular. My mare being one of them and guess what shes been one year and eight months with no signs of navicular and guess what? shes 10 months pregnant and she hasn't had one issue during her whole pregnancy.
Don't breed the horse if it still has navicular because yes the added weight will cause more pain but Im not say you eventually can't if you know what to do
