Help me be creative :)
Hi i want to intruduce my horse to jumping and my friend how is a profesional horse trainer has explained the basics but i have nothing to use a sa jump :S  she told me to use a hay bale but i thought that would be too wide :? scared my never jumped before horse could fall and hurt herself :-| maybe you guys have had experience in this and have had the same problem please any ideas are welcome
I don't see a problem with the hay bale. The spread isn't that much on an average hay bale. Actually, a jump with some spread to it is a bit more natural, since the horse's jump will have spread, too.
I've used orange cones to prop ground poles up into a cross-rail, but the cones aren't that sturdy and there was a lot of getting on and off to set the "jump" back up.
Whatever you use, maybe start out lunging your horse over it first, or try free jumping, to introduce the concept. Splint boots or other leg protection may be a good idea, as well.
Barrels perhaps laid out sideways? I mean the quite small ones that ussually have beer inside lol. You can ussually get them from most pubs/bars if you ask nicely! Or maybe some smallish car tyres if you can find a way of standing them upright?
The possiblities are endless!
lol thanks i bought her a pair of boots the other day and i free lunged her today and she was A STAR!!!! first i lunged her on a line and she was very curious lots of stoping and sniffing which i alowed i wasnt even expecting her to jump at all haha :D there was also lots of treats in between haha then i put 2 haybales layed flat and together so it was more dificult to just run around them hah and she did it was a bit dodgy on the pacing but thats pretty normal then i moved the second bale i had put together with the other on th other side of the circle forming two jumps and she did them both free lunging! she amazed me i would love to post some videos on here but i dont have a camera apart from my phone  next time i will free lunge a lil more then for the fun bit!!! geting on and jumping again for the first time in 4 years haha
Couple fence rails set up on dairy boxes work wonder for me. :-)
