This is the new TWH at the barn, and I think she is going to be stunning when she sheds out, but I am curious as to what you call her pattern?

In the paint horse world, she would be an overo. I don't know if TWH distinguishes patterns of their spotted saddle horses or not.

QHDragon, I would agree with Ridehorses99; definitely an overo (with recessive coloring--I have one who came from a sire that looked like Hidalgo!!). As far as TWHBEA, a spotted saddle horse is a spotted saddle horse! Lovely horse!

Happy trails, Renee

There are several different patterns that produce phenotypes that get lumped together under the term "Overo"-- Frame Overo, Sabino, Splash White, and most recently Dominant White.

Just looking at her without any pedigree/ancestry info, I would guess she is Frame and Sabino-- is her eye blue? That could be from Frame, or could also point to Splash...

QHDragon 01-08-2010 11:15 AM

Yep, she has one blue eye on the side where the white touches the eye. I was thinking that she was splash overo too, but I wasn't really sure if that was a real term!

Here are some websites with characteristics and examples of the various patterns that all get lumped into the "overo" category--

This is an overo in paints because the white does not cross over his back, if it did he would be a tobiano

Eastowest, thank you so much for your post. It annoys me how the APHA persists in defining overo incorrectly. It might sound anal to worry so much about color, but in the case of paints/pintos it's important because of LWO. It is a preventable condition that would never happen again if only more people cared.

Those were alot of good links, thanks for sharing!

Do according to those sites, she looks like a sabino to me.
