Anyone have Donkeys?

Does anyone here have mini donkeys for companion animals? Can you tell me a little bit about them, how their care differs from horses, etc?

I have one mini. He is a very easy keeper so he stays fat. Sweet as he can be but is a little Houdini. We can't seem to keep him in anywhere, though he knows to stay on the property and away from the roads. I haven't noticed him being any more sensative to cold or wet than my horses. Certainly a stubborn little s**t though ;p.

Haha, I don't know about playful. Olen never offered to play with me although he did with all the big horses :D. He did give me my first experience with being bucked off though, I was 3 years old and so was he LOL. Fortunately, he is only about 34 inches tall so it wasn't a very far fall.

Awww... Sounds cute. :D I love mini's!

They aren't too different from horses, really. Watch carefully for whiteline disease and VERY carefully for laminitis. Only feed grain when it's really cold out; donks put on fat very easily and may founder. Speaking of cold, some, though not all, get cold easily. May need a blanket if it gets too bad. Also, they're smart little devils; a hundred times smart then a horse. They'll unlock gates, steal food, find their way out of fences, etc. Be careful. :D

We had a BLM burro. Sweeted thing ever. She got fat incredibly quick. NO alfalfa!!

Ah, yes, my pair were also houdinis, and very playful :)

I have a full sized one..and his daughter who is a mule. They do everything just the same as the horses and arent any fatter than the horses. We dont blanket them, and they eat as much hay as they want. Weve never had any problems with him except he does what HE wants.
