Winter Blankets- Leg Straps?
I just bought a new Amigo blanket, and after I recieved it I found out that that particular doesn't have the elastic leg straps. I wouldn't have thought much about it, but my instructor tells me that they are essential. Do you think they are? I have a hard time believing that, if they were, a brand that never attatches them to their blankets would be so popular. I would also prefer to not have to pay to have leg straps attatched.
Rambo (and other Horsewear Ireland, Rambo-line blankets) do not have the back elastic straps, as the belly surcingles do an excellent job of keeping the blanket in place. It has, however, kept many owners from buying the line, as they feel the need for the elastic back leg straps.
I havent personally owned a blanket without the leg straps but I know people that have and they havent had any problems with it.
I believe Amigo's thought is that their specific design or cut or something keeps the blankets from shifting. I wouldn't have believed it either but there are several horses at our barn with amigos or rhinos (my old pony for example) and none of them have ever needed the leg straps. The blankets really don't shift around, even on the ones that roll and play.
I think I have the exact blanket you are talking about. It has a butt strap instead of leg straps. It doesn't have any problems shifting on my AWB mare and she's had it for 3 years.
