My horse has not been allowed to work since August due to an infection. I am now allowed to ride her lightly. (that includes a little trot and canter.) My problem is she really needs to build back up all of her muscles but most importantly her back muscles. She has a problem where her spine is too close together and the bones rub together. (it may be called kissing spine??)
I am not allowed to lunge her. (due to the infection. I can't do tight circles.)
Does any one have any good exercises or ideas to help build up muscles when riding or something I could do that does not include lunging?

Walk up and down hills-the hill forces your horse to us his back legs and back when walking and builds his back and butt muscles. Walking back down the hill helps her gain balance
Walk over very small jumps or ground poles-this causes her to have to really pick up and move his feet and engage her back.
Walk her long and low-this also engages his back and will help her build muscle.
Sophie19: has said it all! Hills are a great workout for horses. Just remember not to let him/her run up the hills lol.
RiosDad- I will try to get more pics but yes the horse in my sig. is the horse I'm talking about. (she has gained much more weight since then.)
