help gaining confidence?
In October I fell off my pony for the second time. The first time, I didn't loose any confidence, but this time I've had issues gaining it back. I haven't jumped all that much since November because of the cold, but whenever I do I kind of get nervous and like get left or don't go into the jump or don't go fast enough. I fell off over a jump that was 2'6" and haven't jumped that height since. Now I only jump 2'3" and am still scared over the jump that I fell off of even when it's not raised to the top poll. My trainer and my best friend have helped me gain my confidence back and it's not like my pony is bad, in fact she is THE BEST pony I could ask for. When I fell off actually, I got up and she stopped and looked around to find me and then like stood there waiting for me to make sure I was okay. I know I'm a good rider (i'm not perfect, but I am okay for I got 28 ribbons showing in 7 shows first time ever). I LOVE riding and being with horses with all my heart and I love jumping. I don't want to stop jumping because of my lack of confidence, I just can't find a way to gain it back completely...
So my question is do you guys have any ideas on how to gain my confidence back?
Thanks for the help.
What worked for me was riding a different horse after my appendix dropped me for the upteenth time.... If that's not an option for you, then just spend lots of time riding your horse without jumping, and it won't take long for the confidence to come back.... Trust me, I've been dumped more times then I can count....
I agree with Skittle on trying another horse but really no matter how much confidence you gain on another horse you are still going to have those jitters on your pony until you just start small with her again (like just a tiny bit from the ground) and work your way up. As you accomplish each height level your confidence will slowly get better. Thats why its better to start again really low, no matter how silly it seems it gives you more chances to accomplish more levels and gain that confidence back. But my advice is work with it the most on your pony.
I couldn't have said it better myself. Confidence is a hard thing to regain...be patient with yourself and your pony.
If confidence becomes an issue, I just lower the jumps or even go back to ground poles and do them until I'm bored. We're usually back up to our height by the end of the week, but then I have the attention span of a gnat.
