Your opinion on horse show tails??
Hi, I would enjoy hearing your advice on how you keep up your horse's show tail. I have a AQHA bay gelding and I would like him to have a nice, fashy, show horse tail without having to buy one because they can get up there in price. He has a black tail and its very long and thick already.
Thank you for your opinion/advice/ and anything else you provide.
Healthy Hair Care is wonderful!
Do you have it up in a bag?
Alright, what I would do is buy a bag (they're cheap and really easy) and start keeping it up. Take it down about once a week (give or take) and every time to take it down, spray it really well with the Healthy Hair Care (Pink Stuff, as i call it  ) Seeing how his tail is already long and thick, this will just help maintain it.
Good luck 8)
Hey, if you go to health care in this forum under vetwrap, a member brought up that she ties it around her horses tail.... it has amazing results... check it out! I have never heard of doing it before... but man looking at the results i wanna try for my self!! :P
Goodluck mate
If you want to go with something more like that (a bobbed and wrapped tail), I'd use guard-tex. You can get it from Schneider's. Again, not nearly as cheap as a tail bag...
:? Oh ok.... it sounded like a great idea. But yes in stead of using a tail bag.... :)
I keep my horses tail in vetwrap, and I only take it down in the winter when the wrap looks like it is in sad shape or the part above the wrap looks like it is getting loose, the tail comes out nice and unbroken. I have no problems with sticky vetwrap, but it you really worry about that, all you have to do is wrap the tail bundle in cotton cloth or goss before going over it with vet wrap. I also don't put an extremely tight braid in. But, using a braid, it could be possible for some hair breakage...I haven't noticed much, but who my stallion has a pretty thick tail.
As Delgregans Way said :), I posted a picture of it in the vetwrap thread if you are curious. It is important if you do this in insect country though, that you attach a fake, baling twine tail.
Comparing tail bags and tail wraps, I am fairly opposed to bags because I have run into so many problems with them, and they are such hight maintenance. What could be interesting to see would be putting the tail in one of those braided tail bags, braiding the bagged sections, bundling that braid, and then wrapping that up for safe keeping...I don't know if that would work - the bundle might be too big??, but it seams like it would solve breakage problems from braiding, and last a while?
What I do to my horses tail before a bigh show season is I use MTG its a Wondersful Hair growth! it grows up to 3 inches a month you can order it or you can get it at a local Co-op or Tractor Supply its not expensive at all. A big bottle of it is about 15 dollars! it has made my horses Tail & Mane grow about 5 inches in the past 2 months :D you can also use it for Rain Rot or if your horse its bitten by another one your can put it on there to get the body hair grow back :) I highly Recommend it!! :D :D
Tail bags get lost, tail bags begin to get expensive.
...Large mens SOCKS work MIRACLES.
Step One: Wash your horses tail with shampoo and conditioner.
Step Two: Let it dry.
Step Three: Brush tail out with detangler or show sheen etc.
Step Four braid, or french braid your horses entire tail.
Step Five VERY IMPORTANT: Stretch out the sock and TURN INSIDE OUT (trust me on this you do not want to know what happens when you don't.) Cut a four inch line vertically down the top of the tail "sock"
Step Six: Depending on how long your horses tail alread is, fold it up and put into the sock, with the two cuts near the bottom of the bone.
Step Seven: Pull one cut piece through the braid, and tie tightly.
Step Eight: Pull the loop at the bottom of the tail down as far as you can from the outside of the sock.
Step Nine: You're all done! You can leave your horses tail in for as long as you want. It will eventually get dirty, but hey, if you bought that large bag of socks that you only paid 5 bucks for then just use another one!
My horses tail is stunningly beautiful, it drags on the ground at least 6".
