Where are your legs?
This just popped into my head right now, I was thinking how many people's feet/legs hang lower than their horse's belly?

So post a picture, and your horses breed/height/etc, and your height.
I think this will be fun!

When I ride Romeo my feet don't hang off his belly, they are right in the middle.
he is 14.3 I am 5' 0"
I guess it is different for me when I am bb or in a saddle

On PintoBean my feet sit in the middle of his belly too. He is 15.2
and on Kodee my feet hang a bit lower than his belly, he is about 13.2 I am guessing.

I'm 5'7-ish, and my horse is 16.2hh. However, most of that is legs! He has a really small barrel. I'm also really long-legged, with a tiny torso. There are a lot of factors when it comes to matching horse and rider size - one of my friends is just a tad shorter than me but has super short legs, so she can ride 14.3hh horses and still look nice. Me? Not so much ;)
Here's me on Dante (16.2hh)

Me on my last horse, TJ (15.3hh)
On Danny (15.1 1/2hh) - really old pics, hence the general bad-ness. And I was whacking a bug, don't call the ASPCA on me haha!
Colormark (big, bulky 16.3hh Dutch/TB) excuse the AWFUL position, I was cross country schooling and my trainer was a stickler for SHOOORT stirrups haha! get waaaay too pic-happy, sorry! :)

Oh, I forgot breeds. Dante and Tejana are OTTBs, Danny is a registered Appaloosa (haha!), and Markie is a Dutch/TB.

Hm. I am 5'5"

Denny: 16 year old grade QH. He is 15 hands and probably weighs 1150 right now.
(this is in 2001 when he was 7 and I was riding all the time)

Here is a saddle pic from this summer

Here is Dobe, an 8 year old BLM Mustang. He stands at 14.3 and weighs about 1075.
Though this pic is from a couple of years ago, his size really hasn't changed much.

This is Pokey, a 6 year old QH. He is about 15.2 and weighs at least 1200. I don't have any pix of me riding him but you can see where my stirrup hangs.

This is Koda, a 7 year old BLM Mustang. He stands 14.2 and weighs probably 1100. He isn't very tall but his barrel is absolutely huge and his back is broad.
No recent riding pix but you can see my stirrup.

Here is a pic from when I started him a year and a half ago. This was his 3rd ride, I think. He has grown about 2 inches since then.

And last but certainly not least, here is John. He is right around 18 hands and weighs about 2000 pounds (probably more now, these pix are old)
This is his first 3 or 4 rides a year ago.

And here are his most recent riding pix from last fall.

I don't have any pictures, but my legs are REALLY short. They don't even reach past the belly on a small girthed 14hh horse.

I'm basically a giant riding a pony but it's all good. I'm about 5ft 8in and Lacey is 14.1hh. On the plus side, most of my height comes from my torso so my legs actually don't hang that far down on her. It also helps that she has that typical Arab WIDE-ness that fills up a ton of leg.

Here's me riding her english back in October 2008 or so:

However, I've grown an inch or so since then (I'm 19! I'm not supposed to growing! Seriously. Haha).

I don't have any pictures of me actually riding western but I do have pictures of the saddle on her so you can see where my stirrup is:

I don't have any post-worthy pics, lol but I'm 5'2 and mostly leg and Ice is 16hh OTTB. My legs sit right at the bottom of his belly, if I REALLY dropped my heels then they might be under his belly, but maybe not. I ride western, so my stirrups are pretty long.

Boy do I wish you were closer, I'd sure stop by for a visit!

smrobs 01-27-2010 12:12 AM

Haha, I can ride them fine, its the tacking them up and getting on and off that gives me problems. It is really hard for me to get a 40 pound saddle on a horse bigger than about 16 hands. I have to hit John in the side with it and then slide it on up. LOL. By all means, if you are ever in my area, stop by. John hasn't been rode in a few months and he needs it ;).

<Gulp> Ok. Should I bring my own ladder? Oh geez..I can't even imagine how hard it is to find tack for something that size! Thank goodness I like 'em small! (now watch Lillie shoot to 16 hands or something, rofl!)
