Appropriate leg gear?
My horse has a tendency to wack his front feet with his back from time to time. When I am schooling him I have him wear bell boots and am thinking about getting him some polos too. Would it be acceptable to use those in a dressage show?
No. In dressage shows, your horses legs are to be bare.
Like the already stated the legs must be bare...
However, whenever I road my western pleasure horse (who was goofy and wacked himself on a daily basis) I always booted him. Just take it off for the shows.
Like it has been said, your horse must be bare when showing. However, my horse has the same problem. I will use bell boots in warmup and take them off right before our test. Just don't forget!
Yep if you take them off just before the test you're fine. Also, over reaching tends to be a common problem of green/unbalanced/inexperienced horses. I'd say once you have him working in a more balanced way of going he will learn where to put his feet and the problem may just solve itself. A lot of the young horses I've worked with have had the same problem, and after a month or two of consistant, balanced work the problem generally disapears.
I agree with Kayty, more balance work should remedy the situation. Unfortunately he'll have to go bare in shows but you can protect him during training and work on improving his balance, good luck!
