Tadpole??? Are they freakin kidding?
So my area (1) has very little to offer in terms of elementary XC courses. If you're not doing BN, you really have to hunt around for schooling shows. I had not jumped in 3 years before getting a horse of my own. When I finally did, he was a green OTTB. We've been coming along slowly but steadily. Last year we tried an elementary (2') combined show with mixed success. This year I think we're ready to throw in a baby XC course. We've jumped bigger stuff out trail riding. Anyway, I found a show in may that has all 3 phases. Normally they call the 2' division elementary or green as grass. This particular barn calls it tadpole. TADPOLE??? What the freak? It sounds like I'll be competing against 8 year olds on ponies. I was under the impression that the eventing community wanted to get the older re-introduced to riding crowd interested in eventing. How can anyone with any self respect possibly want to enter a division called tadpole? I'm going to do it, but it sure is a TAD condescending, don't ya think?
I've been in several tadpole divisions with some catch rides that I took the day of (yeah... haha) and I can tell you that most places will divide them up into Tadpole A and B or Tadpole open (or senior) and junior. Unless they have a dismal entry in that division, they try not to have you competing against people that are under 18.
green as grass/elementary/tadpole/ baby beginner novice/intro. It's all the same :D
haha, you're right, it does sound awful. Time to strap on the sense of humor and go for it though. Just think about the experience you're giving your horse. Maybe wear some "swimmy" water wings to make sure you don't drown? (joke, trying to be light!)
It really does sound awful. Out here they call it Green As Grass too, and split it up by Jr. & Sr.
Back home they call it Baby Beg. Novice
I think those two names sound MUCH better. Not sure where they would get the idea to call it 'Tadpole' in the first place...?
Ha. I feel like I need to wear my sash and sell cookies first! At least I'm going with two other riders in my over 40 group. Maybe we can be our own division.
I have 2 friends who are Prelim competators, one merged into Advanced and the other didn't make it beacuse her horse was retired due to too many joint issues. The other who made it Advanced, is soon retiring her horse.
They both have green OTTB's, and are in in their 30's - and doing just as you are doing.
So? It may feel foolish, but it isn't about the rider, it is about the horse.
Heck, Darren Chaicchai *sp* comes to Richland Park and rides the Young Event Horse Prospect course, and does Novice as well on young Event Prospects.
How do you think he feels about that? Being an Olypic Eventer, riding amongst those his age, and having to bump down to "our" levels and having ride amongst 12 year old's on Packers or etc, etc, etc.
We have to start somewhere :)
I was merging into Training with Nelson, until his hock injury. Now, we're lucky if we do Beginner Novice.
I was going to do Jump Teams at my barn, High B Division - 2'11. Now, because we've been given the ok - are doing X rails at the trot - and my team mates are 10 and 11 year olds.
It isn't about the height of the fence, it is about the quallity.
I really have no problem with. I just found the name absolutely ridiculous for a sport that involves more and more older riders. If I win, do I get a goldfish instead of a ribbon?
No, you don't get a goldfish - that's animal cruelty. There is no certainty that you would care for the bloomin' thing, are you crazy?
You might get a singing fish though on a plaque. That'd be cool eh! But thinking Tadpole is associated with baby frogs, what about a gold plated lilly pad put on a trophy or make it into a wall plaque??
Maybe I'll win a Boogie Bass! If nothing else, the silly name will keep me relaxed for the show. I'll be doing my dressage test thinking about a singing fish.
ROFL! You made me choke on my cherry jubilee ice cream missy!!
A Boogie Bass! AH HA HA HA HA HA HA HA!
