Beach :)

I will be finally be able to take a horse to the beach :)
It has been a goal of mine (haha I know it sounds stupid but its just something I have always wanted to i guess from movies canter across a beach haha) and I will finally be able to do it :D
well technically its not a beach were going to but theres water and sand hopefully just not on the coast i think
I will hopefully be able to go not this weekend but next weekend :)
I am really excited and hopefully it will happen and not fall through
I just have a question
Would it be safe to canter on beach sand??
like you know when you go walking on a beach and your sink heaps in some spots... would that matter or am I just worrying over nothing (I havn't been to a beach in ages either)
I dont think Buzz has ever been to a beach either so it will be great for both of us :)

Maybe walk the beach first just to make sure. Your so lucky! This year I am taking my horse to my cabin to swim!

That is a dream of mine too!! to gallop along the beach!! ahhh!

Silversun 02-13-2010 12:31 AM

Your very lucky I would love to do that and I think everyone dreams of riding on the beach :)
I would suggest just walk and trot, and if you can find a shallow area, try a light canter there
have fun! and show us pictures!!

Beach riding can be a delight but I warn you - a canter can turn into a gallop especially if there is a group of you riding.
The things to watch out for:
rocks
soft sand - you can usually spot it but it makes sense to walk along before mounting up for a couple of hundred yards just to see for yourself.

but do watch out for
kids with kites
mums walking along with dogs on leads
boys playing football
loose dogs.
the wind blowing in your face

You will notice bystanders turning to look at you and most of them have absolutely no idea
that you the rider have very little control over a horse that has just discovered beaches.

Remember the horse can gallop at full tilt for about a mile - so allow plenty of time to stop.

Enjoy.

I've technically ridden on a beach before... but not in the way you daydream about. We just plodded along a bit and swam in the water, but it wasn't my own horse. But I've always wanted to ride my own horse and gallop across the sand like you see in movies! Have fun and post pictures!

I LOVE riding on the beach. But I havent been in a few years, Even though I live only 25 mins away from it. If your going to lope try and stay near the waters edge b/c the sand there is a bit harder and compact from the water. It still gives enough to be soft on the horse, but isn't like a sandbox. And make sure that you have plenty of room. Jumping driftwood is my fave, but idk if you'll have any there.

We don't really have beaches around here like you do along the coast but I love riding around the lakes and into the water. So much fun to swim with your horse and canter along with that fresh air and the smell of water in your face. I am anxiously awaiting pix cause I am locked in an ice storm right now and don't even want to go outside.
