Buying a new horse....possibly...
Okay, so I've had my pony Millie for about 9 years now. She's about 16 years old, and due to a leg injury a few years ago (along with her age), I can't do very much with her. I can hack her, do small jumps etc, but that's about it. Also, even if she was able for it, I'm too old to be riding her in competitions as I'm 19 and she's a 14.2hh.
Now, the owner of the barn I keep her in told my dad about a 5 year old mare for sale, going prett cheap. He reckons she's a very good horse, and just needs to be broken in for jumping.
Here's where it gets complicated... I'd need to keep her at the barn to train her for a while, but my parents arent willing to pay for two horses, and I'd have to keep them both back at the field we usually rent.
Also, I was supposed to be getting a car, but since this has come up, the car may have to go on hold...but the reason i was getting a car was so that travelling to my pony would be a lot easier. I feel bad always asking to get dropped down to her, and with my parents at work everyday, it does get hard to see her.
I really would love to buy a new horse. I really miss competing and being able to ride a competitive horse. But I just feel really really bad about asking for a horse because of the costs. It's not like my family are in any sort of finanicail situation, but I just feel really guilty about it. And if I am allowed buy her, I'd also feel bad for asking to keep her on in the barn for training her.
Anybody have any advice? :-|
I think this is something that you'll have to sit down and talk about it. One of the things I did think was to maybe considering selling Millie? Since I haven't read too many of your posts I don't really know what she's like but she sounds like she could be used for a younger kid to learn on and play with or to be a trail horse for someone of any age. Just something to think about
Hmm, the thing is I don't think I'd ever want to sell her. I thought about it, but I just love her, and I'd also be scared as to where she may end up.
I really think you need to sit down and talk to your parents. Everything costs money, I've not even got my provisional licence because I'm not going to be able to afford a car for years so can't see the point of forking out for lessons and licence until I can. Is there any way you can put her on a full loan? That will ease your costs.
maybe if its the costs you feel gulity about, keep the new horse at the stables and Millie in the field you rent out, just a suggestion.
Yeah, that's what I was thinking. I'm going to move Millie back to the field in about 2 weeks.
I think I'm taking the new horse on trial for a few weeks, and if I do buy her, i'd keep her in the barn for a few weeks until she has the hang of jumping. And when she has a fair idea I could always move her to the field too. My friend who keeps her horse in the field broke in her own horse for jumping, so I'm sure she could help me.
I do plan on putting as much money toward it as I can.
The only thing I was thinking is using Millie for like pony rides. Have a kid who wants to ride her pay you and then you can sorta give them a little lesson. Maybe you could even lease her out? Just throwing around some ideas.
That's a real Catch 22. You need a car for so many things. You can get to a job that will help pay for the two horses. A new horse may be something that goes on hold for a year. I realize that you want to jump and compete but at 19 you are still very young and a year of saving and waiting isn't so bad.
If there is a possibility of working out a lease that makes owning the two horses AND the car possible, that would be the way to go.
I agree with Iride...at 19 years old, you need your own vehicle. Get the vehicle first and when you do have enough for another horse, then you will be able to spend lots of time with it at the barn because you can drive yourself.
