How can I make my barn Eco-Friendly
What can I do to make my barn eco friendly and still safe and happy for everyone?
im sure there are recycled horse bedding that you could use, and have recycle bins around for people to use rather then putting everything inthe trash
Use the horse manure to fertilize an organic vegetable garden for your own consumption.
Raise chickens free range and underfoot of the horses to help control the bugs - bonus - eggs! Guineas are fantastic for pest control too - they love ticks
solar powered fence chargers if you use electric fence
rain collection barrels at all four corners of the barn for water collection - make sure to get the ones that have had spigots installed in the bottom - run hoses straight to water your garden
Always keep all scraps of lumber, never know when they can be used for fence or barn/stall repair, or even to make little stall name plates :)
Reuse all old feed/shavings bags as trash bags, re use supplement buckets for any number of things (keep lids too!)
Turn barn lights/radio off when not in use
and there's heaps more involved stuff if you ever felt like subscribing to a magazine: Countryside & Small Stock Journal. The magazine of modern homesteading. Promoting self-reliance and simple life style through home food production, gardening, cooking, food preservation and other homesteading techniques
I LOVE this magazine
I saw that book at the bookstore and leafed through it. It had LOTS of really cool ideas on green horse ownership. Like giving old grain bags to animal shelters to put poo in, instead of plastic bags, they hold more and contain the smell.
