- - Lice Problem

I purchased 6 horses about 2 months ago and they just arrived to my farm. Unfortunately, the past owners neglected the horses totally for the past two months. SAD!
4 of the 6 have lice. I bought a shampoo here, but I've been told that it's extremely strong and can be harmful so I don't want to use it. I'm living in Nicaragua, but will be home for the Holiday and am wondering what type of product anyone can reccomend. I've read that a powder or wettable powder would be best. Names and brands anyone?
Any ideas would be great.

I'm sorry to hear that...have you tried calling your vet and gettin suggestions from him?

Yes, in fact I showed him the bottle of shampoo and said it would be okay for older horses, but that it can kill dogs and cats. That sure doesn't make me want to use it. He has to come out again next week so if no one has ideas for me I will see what he says then...

I'm not sure where "home" is but it may be hard to get any products through customs/airport security. You may want to stick with products that are available in your part of the world or check before you bring anything back with you. I have never seen a horse with lice but I know rough kept, poor condition horses can get them. I think any pyrethroid insecticide would work in getting rid of them. I do believe it is deadly to cats, not too sure about dogs.

Sorry to repost but wanted to add, it may be a good idea to worm them all after you get rid of the lice.

I have a book on natural treatments and it says to add Tea Tree oil to horse shampoo and bathe. I was told by someone with the problem that worming at the same time is important.

tea tree oil is the best thing to use in any lice case, lice really do not like it and will stay away from the smell......it's not harmful to any pets
