What kind of cooler should I get?
I wanted to get a cooler for my horse because she sweats like crazy after I ride her and I worry about her getting cold. I towel her off as best I can and fluff her fur up to try and get her dry but by the time she's done eating and ready to go out she's still damp. I'd prefer not to clip her. I've done research and found that polar fleece is crap when it comes to absorbing moisture but wool absorbs water well. However I don't have any first hand experience with either. I was hoping someone here would have some suggestions on what type of cooler would be best and still wouldn't break the bank.

I thought this one would be good; but I'm still not sure

If someone could give me links for coolers that work well and coolers to avoid I'd appreciate it. Thanks.

Wool is definitely the way to go, but it's more expensive. And you can't just throw it in the washer/dryer when it needs a cleaning.

Are you in an area with really cold winters and/or do you ride at night? Since it sounds like your girl gets pretty sweaty, if it's really cold outside, you may want to invest in a nice cooler (and one that goes all the way up her neck like the one you linked). You could look for a used one to help save money.

Wool is the best. And seems to work better in my experience.
Fleece is cheaper and easier to care for.
I haven't had experience with Irish Knits...I own one but have never used it. It's doesn't seem as cozy as fleece or wool.

I actually just ordered a cooler from On the website it says its fleece, but on the actual cooler, it says its 100% wool. And it was only $30. I'm going to try it on my mare today and I'll let you know the fit and everything. For the first time buying a cooler i like it. It has the extended neck up to the poll there's one surcigle, mulitple velcro closures at the chest and up the neck and a tail cord. And it isnt as heavy as i thought it would be.

I tried it out and it works great! I didnt work her to where she was dripping wet, but she did work up a little sweat and I put it on her and it really worked well. I love how it comes up the neck and its simple to put on. For $30 i feel it was a great deal.

Is it one of those that is just a square but it drapes over their neck and runs right up to the poll?

I love those! :P

it isnt one of those square ones actually. Its has more of a hmm i think taper neck. Here's the one I have.

yes it is! I actually just found it and am in love. This cooler is exceptional. My mare seems to like it too...maybe because her neck gets warm, i dont know. But i really like how long it hangs on her, really covers her well. And i also loved that I was able to get the burgundy color (its the color theme i have going for her.. that and purple)

I use a fleece one and I really like it. Mine goes up my horses neck, which I like because believe it or not horses do sweat there. =] When I put it on the moisture collects on the top of the blanet and makes my horse perfectly dry!
