Knee pain when riding English? Help!
Hi everyone! :)
I usually ride in an english saddle, but even after fifteen or so minutes of riding my right knee starts to get really stiff and sore. After riding for awhile, when I get off I can't even walk for ten minutes because the pain is so awful (and I'm only 18!) I just have to stand and let my horse graze until I can move again. I never get any knee pain when I ride bareback, so I figure its got to be something to do with my saddle/stirrups and the way I'm riding in them. I have tried lowering my leathers but it doesn't seem to help much. Lately I've read a bit online about certain types of stirrup irons helping relieve knee pain and I was wondering if anyone has ever tried them. I don't have alot of money, but I'd be willing to invest a bit more in a good pair if it meant I could keep riding!
Thanks so much to anyone who helps! :)
Try jointed irons. Also have someone video you riding, to and away from the camera, as well as on each side, walk and trot. When reviewing the video, look to see if your right foot is turned out more than your left, or if it's more forward, or... ?
You're likely doing something with that foot without realizing it. I would bet you turn that toe out more and are putting extra strain on your knee. Pay attention to how you walk and stand; look down. Does your right foot point out a bit more than your left?
i ride western, not english, however i may have had a similar experience of sorts. couple questions though... how much riding have you done/do you do? i had problems with my right knee getting extremely achy and sore when i first bought my horse when i was 22 (i was learning to ride at the time, too), and into the next year when i went up and started working at a kid's camp. i didn't do anything significantly different, but i'm pretty sure it was the sheer number of hours i rode at the camp that helped *my* case overcome the pain.
Deff jointed Stirrups they do help. I broke my leg a few years back and had a problem riding english. I sold my saddle and went to a dressage saddle.
I wanted to jump again so I tried the jointed stirrups adn I have to ride in a saddle with knee rolls. It did make a diff.
You may also want to get checked by a DR
jointed irons do help.
is the pain only when you are riding? if it's only when you are riding then I agree with luvs. get a video or have someone watch you ride to see what you are doing that may be causing it.
if you are having the pain any other time than just riding I would suggested getting checked out by a doctor. knees aren't always the most cooperative of joints. :P
I've had knee problems for a while (Im 18 too) my knee cap was tilted. You say you ride bareback, thats where I got it from, though it doesnt hurt when riding bareback, if you dont do bareback for a while it starts to take effect. but thats just me.
Not that this will help, but I get pain in my right knee when Iv been standing still all day at work and putting more pressure on it than when walking around. I also get it when riding (english) I cant bend my leg even slightly for ages. Iv found out that I tend to put more pressuer on my right leg/foot when riding. My riding buddy noticed I wasnt very relaxed in the lower legs and was "standing" or "resting" my weight in the stirrups. She reminded me to use my thighs and knees, not my wrap my legs round my horse! ha ha. Hope this helps
ps. thats also why i got a "burning" feeling in the balls of my feet, and numb toes. lol
