Horse Show Prep
Hello, I'm new to rated showes and I would like to be prepared for my first one.
What are the steps, or tips and tricks you guys use when preparing for shows. I ride Hunter, just so there is no confusion. thank you all :)

Dont be like me and go to bed at 1:00 in the morning and wake up at 4:30. lol. Relaxing and haveing fun is key. Have a check list for everything you need.

Depends on the horse.

My horse for example, to prepare for a rated shows he needs to get shod a week or preferably two weeks prior with Aluminum shoes. (He can sometimes be sore after being shod, so taking two weeks before the show mean he'll more then likely be right as rain come show week).

If he is on any coat enhancers that have Paprika in them, you have to cut that out of the diet as Paprika tests positive as Capsaicin. If not then you are fine.

I like to ride or lunge my horse everyday before a show or put him on extended turnout (like full days worth) just so he's worked and relaxed.

I empty out my trunk of everything that I don't need, I double, triple, quadruple check everything because I hate having to buy something at the show. We load the trailer the night before we leave of everything except horses. You call the braider two weeks before the show to make sure they are available.

At the show my horse needs to be lunged in the morning, and if time permits washed, dried and then ridden before my class. My horse takes a lot of prep. I like handwalking him around the grounds so I am confident he has seen and heard everything. Wednesday you can usually school over fences in all the arenas and I like doing that or having the assistant trainer do it if I can't be there.

Well, I am still in Open Show Alley but lately I have been taking my video camera and setting it up on a fence post ;) Then I review our schooling afterward. It's helping me address some problems with my position.

1. Clean your tack and make sure that the Horse is washed. 2. Braid your horse's mane and tail and groom him. 3. Make sure that everything that you are going to be wearing is clean. Wear cream or white jodhs. 4. Get lots of sleep and make sure you pony is well rested too.

No white in the hunter ring, sorry.

OP, be sure you have all your required paper work and numbers so your time in the horse show office goes smoothly. Bring more checks than you think you will need in case you close out your account and decide to do something else, etc.

Sit down and make yourself a list of everything you will need for your horse. Do not forget things like supplements, poultice, leg wraps, etc.

Be prepared for long days that are exhausting but well worth it.

Pack yourself some healthy but easy snacks (breakfast bars, nuts, etc) so you are sure to have enough energy even if you do not have time to run out for a meal or get to the food booth.
