Need help with Canter
I just have a problem Canter with the right leg.
My horse will always canter with her left leg lead.
I try to drag my outside leg back, Make a circle than canter but not thing work:[
But when I ride another school horse, I can make them canter with the right leg lead.
So I just want to ask if anyone know how to make her canter in the right way:].
(So sorry for my bad English haven't use it much :])
Have you ever lunged your horse? Does she take her right lead on a lunge line without a rider? Will she canter on that lead in her pasture?
Horses do tend to favor one side over the other. My guess is that she is probably pretty one-sided, and needs to be evened up. Try lots of circles, really riding them and getting a good, correct bend in both directions at the trot to help her build the muscles she needs to bend in her right lead canter.
If she's willing to canter on the lunge or in her pasture, perhaps you're unbalancing her or interfering with her movement. Review your canter aids, and think through each change that you make in your position and what that change is asking your mare. Be sure that you aren't leaning forward with your upper body, leaning sideways, and that you have a little extra weight in your outside seat bone to drive that outside hind leg under her into the lead. If she gives you the correct lead, ride her forward on it several strides (don't chase her in endless circles on the lead, you don't want her to associate taking that right lead with working really hard), and then bring her back to a forward trot and praise her and let her catch her breath in walk or trot, then ask again.
Hope that was helpful to you, and good luck! :D
Thank you Scoutrider, I’ll try your way and will let you know how it’s work :D
Well, When I lunged her she will canter with the wrong leg lead first than I have to ask her to come back to trot for a several time before she can canter with the correct leg lead.
And I'm a bit confuse with her because before that she use to canter with right leg lead. And never left, but after my coach rode her about 4-5 times she can canter at both side correctly. But about 2 month ago she start to canter only by her left leg lead. So I'm very confuse with her and why is she like that.
I change the saddle from all propose to Dressage saddle by the time she change her way of cantering. So maybe is this why? I'm not really sure :]
As far as her "favorite" lead changing, if muscles aren't exercised they weaken. It may simply be a matter of using one side or the other more. Perhaps in building up her left lead, her right lead was not exercised as much and has become the weaker of the two. The best way to fix that is to simply exercise both sides equally. For every right bend, make a left bend, and vice versa.
My horse did the same kind of thing on the lunge (take the wrong lead, try again a couple of times and then get the correct lead). His problem was sheer greenness at the canter and not understanding his leads. He's much more consistent now after getting him equally strengthened and exercised on both sides at the walk and trot. He's still learning, and one side is definitely weaker than the other at the canter, but he's progressing which is always good.
I'm quite sure now that it's because of the saddle today I ask my coach to ride her and use the old saddle on and she can canter with the right leg lead now, but still have to come back from canter to trot a few time:]
And thank you for your help Scoutrider! It's really help me a lot :]
