What am I supposed to do with my goat when I take my horse to horse camp with me?
In the summer I'll be going for a week... and at my barn ( in my backyard ) it's just my horse and goat ( they were a package deal ). Sometimes my goat comes on my balk deck and lies against my sliding glass door ( we're going to put up a fence in the summer ). My goat sometimes plays with my dog, but my dog is in inside dog... my goat sleeps in the barn, with my horse, because they're very close.
I've got no one to take my goat, which, I really didn't even like considering...
So... what should I do? I was thinking of asking the place if I could bring my goat, too, or I was thinking of asking my mom to get another animal ( highly doubtful she will ) like something small, though. I don't think my mom will go for another goat, maybe a chicken? And not one that lays eggs. I don't know much about chickens, are they hard to take care of? Just one? Would that chicken get along with my goat...? I doubt my mom will even let me get one, though.
I think you should get another goat, goaties love other goaties for companions ;) Can't hurt to ask? I don't think goats and chickens would pay much attention to each other?
Am I bad? My first thought was to eat him. Cabrito! lol
Anyways, I dont think a chicken would be the best bet. Id say a goat or sheep.
eat him? haha, nooo. never in a million years. I also asked my mom...she said no. No to a chicken and/or another goat. No to anymore animals, actually.
Tell her goats actually NEED other herdmates. Since your horse is out with him(or her) now, it's not a problem, but you could have problems when you split them up.. Mental issues. I know and understand your position; don't get me wrong :) I'm 14 and when I saw the words "My can we get a --" the automatic answer is no. Help your mom understand [although I KNOW it's hard] and research about goats, you can get free ones, rescue ones, anywhere. (:
Hmm... maybe if you let your dog spend a few days with the goat=] But he's an inside dog, he might not like sleeping outside or in the barn
I actually raise goats. They do need other goat or herd companions and though the little thing will be lonely during that week, it will be ok. Just have your mom feed him and give him some extra loving(if she will) lol He will be ok. Another goat would be ideal, but if that's a no go then just have your mom keep an eye on him. He will probably be more loud than usual and may even try to escape to find his buddy...make sure the fence is well secured before you leave.
Your goat will be fine if your mom will look after him while you are away. If he is halter broke, you could take him with you, but would you really want too? He will likely get out of ANY pen that he is put in, unless it is designed for goats and will be a royal pain. For only a week, IMO, it's not worth it. Leave him at home where he knows everything is OK and he'll be very happy to see you guys when you get back.
Goats don't make friends with chickens. If he is friends with your dog and they see each other during the day, the nights are short and he'll deal with it.
