How do I get my horse to lift her feet?
I've been working on training my new TB how to jump, and I cant seem to get her to lift her feet. I was able to train my older mare to jump and lift her feet with no problems, but I cant seem to get my TB to lift her feet. I worked her over two trotting poles today, should I use more than two and see how she does, or is there something else i can do to get her to lift her feet?

Try a few trot poles, about 6, on the ground. Once she's going over them without hitting them put one end of each one up so one side is left then the next right etc and have her go over them. Keep her straight in the middle and squeeze her as you sit. Eventually you should be able to have both ends raised and have her go over them without knocking them.
Keep her at a trot and make them higher . As they get higher make them wider. If they're starting to get high enough she can't just trot over them and she has to jump them, make them cross poles.

I'll have to try that and see if it works. Its weird because a couple weeks ago I had two jumps set up, one 2 foot and directly next to that a 1 foot jump and I had both horses going around and at the same time both Shadow And Lily jumped but Shadow went over the 2 foot and lily went over the one foot, and they both cleared it, and then the day after I had one jump set up one foot and was cantering the TB around and she cleared it everytime, but other than one foot I cant get her to jump any higher because she just runs throigh the jump.

that is a bit of a could try solid jumps (little ones) that she can't run through.

okay. Well the jumps are solid And when I say she runs through the jump, im saying that instead of jumping the jump she runs through and knocks them over like she doesnt see them, but i know she does.

can you describe the one she "runs through?" Does it have a ground line (a pole a few feet from the jump)? You might want to try that. Set the ground line about a foot or two in front of the jump and send her around. Also, who are Lily and Shadow? (I'm sorry, I've been a posting slacker and haven't been on much recently) Which one is the one you're having problems with?

What do you mean by "she's not lifting her feet?" Does she kick the ground poles? I couldn't get Cirrus to stop kicking ground poles, so I got some thick square poles (I used leftovers from my parent's house renovation, but you could just use some 4"x4" poles) and made him keep doing it. The nice thing is that since they're square they don't roll and since they're heavier, they make their point a little stronger (remember to protect your horse's legs with wraps and bell boots, etc. They'll still feel the poles and won't hurt themselves).

Is she doing ground poles OK but knocking over the jumps? If this is the case, you really should get her checked out by a vet to make sure she's not having knee/hock/back problems. Otherwise, you may just need to lower the jumps and practice practice practice. Amir has a great suggestion. Depending on her history, she may not have the required strength yet. It took Cirrus a seemingly long time (although in retrospect, it didn't take that long) to become strong enough and to figure out the whole jumping thing.

Final thought for right now: she may just not be interested in jumping. Some horses like it, others don't. I'm sorry for the super long post. Let me know how it goes! :-)

Shadow is my Thirteen year old mare that jumps 4 foot, Lily is my Thoroughbred, the one I am having issues with. When i say she runs through the jumps i mean that she doesnt even try to jump it, she just knocks it down and keeps cantering. She likes jumping she just doesnt get the conscept of actually jumping over the poles if they are higher than one foot. She does good over ground poles it just gets to the point that if I make the jump any bigger than 1 foot she just plows through it. She is an ex-racehorse and she is perfect for jumping, she knows how to bend around your leg and turn right on cue. Its the part of actually going ovr any higher jump that she doesnt get. She has no leg problems so it might just be that she doesnt get it. Maybe if i work her with Shadow it might help.
