Sure hope I spelled that right...
Anywho, my mare is kept out on pasture with a pond 24-7. She gets loose salt mixed in with her feed everyday.
I am headed to a show next month & it is for three days & she will have to be kept in a stall. I am really worried about her not drinking the water there since she drinks pond water at home. :-(
How do electrolytes work? I have always used loose salt but would it be better to give her electrolyte paste before the long trailer ride & while shes at the show?
Or should I just increase the amount of salt I give her when she is there just to make sure she drinks plenty of water?
Haha... I'm probably not making any sense... help. How do they work, when to use them, paste or powdered, etc.
well ive never heard of a horse not drinking normal water just cos they're used to pond water, but you never know. Try getting her to drink normal water at home before the show and see how you go (=
My opinion is that unless you have a stream you shouldn't let her drink from a pond. Still water usually collects things that aren't good for your horse (like a dead rotten animals). I wouldn't push the water onto her and wouldn't even offer the salt during the trailer ride. If the horse is thirsty she will drink out of a bucket. Just make sure you always keep it filled up.
