Putting A Saddle Into Storage
As I have no horse it fits currently, I am going to have to put my beloved Longhorn Barrel into storage. I have a rack, and a cover. How should I go about this to make sure she stays nice?
The leather needs to breath so putting it in a container or covering it with a non-breathable material is a no-no. That is a good way to induce mold and mildew.
I would thoroughly clean it with saddle soap, being sure to get all sweat off any leather then I would give it a good oiling (or conditioning) and store it in the house or another area that is more humidity controlled then a barn would be. I would also take it out periodically, once per year at least, and clean/condition the leather. It could last and be supple indefinitely that way.
It is in my dry warm basement. I don't even keep my working saddle in the barn in the winter. Only the dry summer months will I leave it out in the barn.
Thanks guys! The cover is a loose dust cover that's canvas, so it should breathe fine. I'll probably be bringing it into my spare bedroom on it's rack. I just adore this saddle. Hopefully I'll be able to use it again in the future. ^_^
