Making it interesting?!
Soooooooo obviously based on a lot of my recent posts, I have been working with my gelding on his ground manners. I have read a couple articles about trying to keep training time interesting and fun for the youngsters. How do you do that??? How do you entertain a horse?
maybe you could try the 7 games by parelli
Keep his mind occupied. For example both mine like to lunge around the barrels. You can create some obsticles like tarp tape, rails, plastic bags on ground etc. and make him walk/lunge over it.
A couple of things I do with the little ones.
Use a bandana or small towel and play peekaboo. Cover their nose eyes ears tie it around their head and ears. I like a bandana because its a little more transparent so they can see through it more than a towel.
Jumping jacks. I jump up and down all around them (good exercise, skip the gym on the days you do this). start at the shoulder in case they decide to kick, work your way back to the barrel with your hands on their back. Do it till they stand still. This is excellent training for the day you get on to teach them to stand still while mounting. I eventually work my way to getting them to stand with a mounting block next to them and stand still while I climb on the mounting block.
Whirlygig. with a lunge rope stand to the side and throw the rope over them till you can throw it completely around them standing on the opposite side then pull the rope till they give to the pressure and do a whirl around to you.
Just a couple of fun ones for you to try :)
I've used a hula hoop to keep things interesting.
Set up a trail course with a gate, bridge, ground poles (set in all different patterns on the ground), flowers set around the obstacles, pinwheels, etc.
A bag of cans works great for sacking out a horse.
Teach your horse to have something dragging behind him. Or start teaching him to drive.
Horse training is only limited by your imagination.
All good suggestion. Be cautious with dragging things...its a good thing to learn, but you need to go very slowly and carefully. An accident can scare them quite badly and make driving training that much harder.
There's a lot more than I thought! That all makes great sense. Oh I can't wait to try them hehe :)
