Horses pets or tools?
Ok so as you know we have had alot of topics about horses and friendliness and other stuff. Well i recently was talking to my dad and he said there's one thing thats different about our horses that may act up at times and horses that are top show horses. He says the top show horses or any horse that you basically wanna train to be a show horse or to do tricks and stuff is only a tool. He tells me that our wrong is we think horses can be pets and do work too. basically we confuse our horses....
I wanted to see your guys points of view on this.
How to put this... It's really difficult to put in words.
Imagine doing business with a friend. There are times when you are just friends but there are also times when the relationship is mostly business. The key is finding the balance that works best for you. When show season comes around its mostly business. There are goals in mind and the main purpose of our relationship is to achieve those goals. However, it can't always be like this and it really doesn't have to.
Also consider sports teams. When team mates hang out it's all fun and laughs but when it's game time everyone better know their job well or things could come to a head and the game will be lost.
The only difference here is that riders have a double role. We are both team mates and coaches. We have all the leadership responsibilities of a coach in addition to all the companionship and partnership responsibilities.
It's certainly a complex thing and requires a lot of balancing.
There neither pets nor tools, there partners. :)
in addition to that, my horse is my friend too. :) I love just hanging out with him. I even take him for a walk with me sometimes when I don't want to go alone :)
I also like what was said above though too, because when it is time to show or compete, we get down to business, but I like to think he is enjoying the things we do as well...He sure doesn't seem unhappy about it. My horses jump right in the trailer almost as if they are excited to see where we will go next .
They are not tools (and I don't think any live creature can be considered as a tool). They are part of my family (as well as my dogs and cats).
Well see my dad made a good point and it got me thinking about it. Big top show horses normally just get worked and put out to pasture or something. While our horses don't we pet and mess around with our horses after work.
He said its basically like how you have police dogs you ever wonder why they wont let you pet the dogs? Because they are trained and used as a "tool" not a "pet"
do you get it?
i only semi agree with this but yea it was a pretty good point my dad made. I just wanted to share it :)
I see your dads point Jr I think the word "tool" sounds too impersonal though. Maybe "instrument", like a great musician or artist loves and cares for his intruments the same for an equestrian athlete uses the horse as a living instrument. It must be kept in shape and have a professional relationship, but they can love it just the same. I'm sure even the top performance horses get some lovin  :)
I wouldn't agree regarding the dogs. Most people working with them often comes to kennels and mess with the dog just for the sake of it. They call them "partners", btw. And I've seen police (and even border patrol) let people pet their dogs. I believe that those top performance horses get some love too (as Vida said).
