Opinions on nutrition for a new foal?
What are some opinions on nutrition for a foal? We just had our first foal and I will admit that I am probably an overly proud new owner and have overly high hopes and expectations and think I have the best new colt there has ever been since there have been horses.(but thatís everyone right) I am also new to this whole thing and have been doing lots of research. I want to get the most potential as far as showing him and him being a performance horse. One think I have learned is that his nutrition is a big part. Like I said I have done lots of reading but I would like to know what you guys all think. All pointers are welcome. Please share what you know.
As soon as they start nibbling on mom's grain buy them a creep feeder and their own foal grain. I would stay away from sweet feed and look for a complete feed with atleast 14% protein. Feed that according oto weight.
In addition to that they need hay if they aren't on a field with grazing. I feed timothy hay or a timothy mix. Some people like to feed their babies alfalfa or an alfalfa mix, it depends on the foals condition and what nutrients they need. Your vet can help you make these decisions.
