What do you think about using horse cookies when training or just as a treat?
I use Apple biscuits, kinda like scooby snacks! My dog likes them just the same...
"CuttingEdge says to Sam, Would you pull the cart for 2 scooby snacks?" Lol!
As far as feeding them by hand, that depends on who it is, if they develop the habit of nipping or not.
I was actually just going to ask this question..I used naturally made oat, mollasses, apple, carrot cookies. They're no bigger than a fifty cent piece. I usually (for an hour of training) bring 2-4 cookies (depending on what we are doing) and a big carrot (is this too much??). I usually end up breaking up the carrot. I tend to give them to him when he doesnt expect it, and it is usually during grooming too when we are doing things that make him uncomfortable. That's how I got him used to the spray bottle was with cookies, now he doesnt expect them, and he isnt afraid of the bottle! I guess it's how you use them and when. I don't like the idea of using treats as a reward, but so far so good. like if we have had 15 or so minutes of really good work sometimes Ill just break off a piece of carrot and give it to him to let him know he's doing good (plus lots of love!). Just my two cents :D
I rarely give horse treats I guess I never got into the habbit but i do when I think about it but if my horse does something really good I will award him with a treat :)
I do that sometimes if my horse is being really good; she finds it quite rewarding! :D LOL! She loves those horse cookies.
I give them to Vida way to often but she has never been nippy. I give them to her to shut her up when we are playing hide and seek with Sassafras and my husband. Othewise she whinneys and gives away our position.
I like using treats for tricks and after a workout/training session. Even after grooming if Blu stands nice. :)
I use Apple Cookies, Something Gourment, and even homemade stuffs.
