Am I going to get sick?

Am I going to get sick from kissing my horse on his nose/head? My grandpa whos got something wrong with him said, if i kissed him or hugged him he would die because of the bacteria now I am worried.
But hes been sick his whole life and I have kissed been licked by horses and I have not goten sick or killed anyone.

Hes been around horses his whole life is a farm owner owns a ton of horses even is keeping my horse at his place until we move...

I've never heard of that, but I wouldn't risk it if the horse had some sort of skin infestation or infection such as mange etc. I kiss my horse on the nose all the time and I've never gotten sick.

If you mean will you get something transferred from your horses, then I've never heard of it. I hand feed a treat or two to some of my girls and get their slobber all over my hands. I've cleaned snot and took care of strangles without getting infected so I don't think you will get sick from giving your horse a hug or a peck on her nose.

As roro said, if the horse has something that is contagious, I would avoid kissing his nose but even then, transferring to human is rather rare if at all possible. You could, however, transfer something to a healthy horse.

Yeah I told him I never heard of getting sick from a horse but then he told me that his friend died from it. But I dont think he knows the entire reason why he died.
Which i think roro is right about the contagious disease. None of my horses don't have any of that.

I dunno what hes talking about lol...

The only horse to human transmittable disease that I'm aware of is rabies. But then, rabies can be transmitted from any species to another.

Horses just aren't vectors for human diseases. If they were, we'd have died off long ago due to our closeness and interaction with them.

I think your grandpa is full of it, myself. Show him this article if he still thinks horses are major carriers of human diseases:

sheesh, I should be in hospital, desperately ill, if thats the case! My horses get showered in kisses

EventersBabe 04-19-2010 01:57 PM

thats what I told him. I told him many people go around kissing there horses noses and not get sick. Something else must of been wrong with the horse to have killed his friend.
Its horrible that his friend died but he must know that horses cant kill you if you kiss there noses.
He said, something about Bacteria or something I dunno i am totally confused.

ponyboy 04-19-2010 08:12 PM

I thought Hendra was was transmittable to humans? Not that it's at all common of course.

I think that Grandpa is sorely mistaken. I have been around horses since the day I was born, been kissing and hugging on them since I could walk and never got sick (from them anyway). Maybe his friend got sick and died from something completely unrelated and he just assumed it was from the horse, or the doctor made a mistake and claimed "horse related illness", or maybe the horse did have some weird sickness or bacteria. However, a healthy person has nothing to fear from a healthy horse as far as bacteria and germs go. The only thing that I can think of besides rabies that can even be shared by horses and people is tetanus but that has to come from an open wound, I think.
