Hi all, I'm new here and I have a question about Alfalfa pellets. I have a 12-year-old mare who is turning out to be a hard keeper. I was reading that Alfalfa pellets could help put a little weight on her. How much is enough? Or what exactly is a serving? Currently she is getting Mare/Foal three times a day. 2 scoops in the morning, one during the day and 2 more in the evening (a scoop is one of those 3 quart ones) Plus her free choice hay. She also gets corn oil. I'm just curious as to how much of the pellets to add to her feed. Thanks for the help. :-)
Start by adding one scoop of pellets per meal, and see how it goes from there.
Feeding horses isn't a one size fits all kind of thing. Each animal is different and based on their breed, age, health, amount of exercise, etc., it takes some tweaking to figure out how much each should get to keep them at a good weight.
I do have a question, though. Why are you feeding her Mare/Foal? Is she lactating or pregnant? If not, you might do better and spend less on a complete feed.
Go to feed section on www.stablemade.com for good info on the dangers of pellets & other good stuff on how to feed/water your horse. Good luck!
If so, totally not cool and against the rules of the BB.
I agree with Speed Racer, start with a scoop and modify it if you need to.
My TB mare was on alfalfa pellets last fall and over the winter. She got a 3 qt. scoop (soaked) once a day (PM feeding) in addition to her normal grain ration. She put on weight beautifully with it.
No, it's not my site, just trying to share good info. I'm new, guess we can't recommend another site? Mea Culpa for not reading the rules sufficiently!
Oh yes, sorry for not being specific. She is lactating... has a one month old.
I read some of it. What I did read is interesting, but nothing astounding. Didn't tell me anything of which I wasn't already aware.
Sorry if I came across as harsh. We've had a fair share of spammers and advertisers here, so we're a little punchy.
Thanks to all of you for the information! It is greatly appreciated! I've been giving her and my gelding just a little each meal just to get them used to it. I haven't been soaking it because they seem to eating them okay, but I'll probably start soaking them just to be safe. I tried the cubes before a long time ago and they would NOT eat those unless they were soaked. Can't say I blamed them.. the cubes are ridiculously big! Thanks again guys!
Start slowly and build up to the recommended amounts on the bag. The manufactures put recommended amounts on them for a reason.......LOL ALL forage should be fed by weight, so just because one person feeds 2 scoops doesn't mean you should. Exactly how much did that persons "scoop" weigh?????? It's not based on "volume" it should be based on weight. See what I'm getting at?????
