Cracks in hoofs
I don't have any pics, but today when I was planning to going riding but Buzz front hoofs have cracks in them.
I am going to ring the farrier as soon as possible but my friends dad has the number and he just left on a trip.
But I was wondering if it would be ok to still ride?
Where I ride is on dirt so it soft and he doesn't seem to be in any pain, no limp.
Anyway I got a pic and drew on where I'm pretty sure its cracked
What is his shoeing schedule? Every 6 weeks? I have Nelson on a 6 week schedule because if I leave him any longer, he ends up looking aweful.
Talk to your farrier, but sometimes when cracks are at the fronts like that, they're stress cracks... make a point to make sure the angles are correct for your horse, and the feet are balanced
this was the test run to see how long we would wait but I think it will be every 6 weeks from now on
I still havn't been able to ring the farrier though I think I will go to the local stockfeeds and get the number
My horse gets similar cracks when the seasons change from colder to warmer weather. Her feet are so strong in the winter when theres moisture, but when the ground gets harder and drier, it has negative effects on her feet. They get a little chipped (the 2 that arent shod) and her front feet with shoes get cracked
Its not a major problem ... my farrier says its just important to trim her regularly, and maybe even feed a specialist hoof care food, like happy hoof (we have it in engalnd) and if it gets worse you can use stockholm tar to fill the cracks!
He did when I first met him have really bad feet, because the previous owner had not cared for them, but they havn't been bad since and it seems one day they were fine the next split. all though I didn't really do anything with him the day before and didn't really check as I was in a rush so maybe it was there before.
I also just relized it has been way over 6 weeks the farrier said he was going to ring but of course he didn't. :(
So I deffinlately(sp) need to ring but of course I don't have the number grrr
the farrier came out yesterday. :)
I was freaking out because I forgot to leave Buzzs halter on and my dad had to hold him and help catch him(my dad is the non horsies person ever lol).
I told the farrier that he didn't have a halter on but he should come straight up to he said it was fine. :)
I tired to give my dad as much detail as possible on how to catch a horse lol.
But it went well and Buzz feet are fine, no shoes needed :)
My gelding gets cracks in the warmer weather some times. I simply make sure his trimming schedule fits his needs, use a hoof moisturizer, and keep on eye on them. My farrier is usually really good about the cracks if and when my gelding gets them.
I would like to see more pictures of your horse's hooves. From the side, from the bottom and no red lines??
I wonder about the balance of the foot. From the picture it sure looks off. Also the feet seem flared??
