Bit or chain?

Okay, so I'm actually a little confused about how a stud chain is used. I'm not going to use one, I'm just curious, because I've never used one, or seen one used. I'd hate to end up doing stud work and then be told I need to use one and I don't know how. The racing stable I worked at always used anti-rearing bits with a halter - all the colts had to be led in one, otherwise it was at your own discretion whether you could control a horse in a halter or not.

Speaking of which, do you prefer one over the other? I've seen photos of chains used different ways, including through the mouth. The anti-rearing bits just had a ring in the same place as the halter ring, so you'd clip them together with the lead.

Some reference images, in case you don't know quite what I'm talking about.

Chain through the mouth.

Anti-rearing bit (sometimes with a head strap instead of clips).

Under chin, from the cheek.

Over the nose. Most common arrangement?

I use it from the cheek under the chin for showmanship or halter but I don't need it to handle my horse. I do it just for the classes. I've seen it used all three ways. Through the mouth is usually with Studs for better control...

So is it more of a fashion / class requirement thing in most cases?

Under the chin is required in showmanship classes.

Other than that I think it is a matter of what a specific horse needs. Obviously if you have a horse that is prone to going up as their form of revolt then under the chin is probably not best.

I've never used ones and can say almost 100% that I never will.
I've only ever seen it used over the nose. Through the mouth just looks out right painful for the poor horse.
I was at an ag show last year and I saw some poor little pony fully tacked up in the sun with the chain over his nose and he was tied up by the chain :( I felt sorry for him.

That was bad. Horses should never be tied when they have a chain on... bad bad bad!

I wanted to beat on the owners but they weren't even there! Terrible people IMO
