Halter and Showmanship trouble...
Okay, I'm sure by now everyone knows that I have a 3yr old Paint filly named Janie Belle. Well anyway I am doing 4-H this year. I have never shown in a horse show before, and neither has Janie.
Since showmanship is your grade in 4-H I have to show Janie in hand. Well she is having problems with leading. She walks behind me and she won't trot. She just trails behind me. How can I get her to walk and trot by my shoulder? Also how do you teach a horse to square up?
I had this trouble with a youngster I was training. When I led him I would make sure he was by my side and say "walk on", If that didn't work, I would give him a tap with the end of my leadrope to encourage him to walk on. Also you could try carrying a whip and giving her a little tap while saying "walk on" or "trot on". Hope that helps x x x

Thanx I'll try that, how do you get them to square up?

For my horses, when they don't walk with me I hit them behind my back with the lead rope or have a crop and tap them on the shoulder behind my back on that until they learned the cues and to do them when you say to. For setting up, you have to put the horse how you want them, as in stop and then pick up their feet and put them where you want them, and say "Whoa" and then do that every single time you stop the horse whenever you lead them, and then they eventually associate "whoa" with setting up.
