quick question

I have searched everywhere for an answer to my simple question...

how long does it take for a STATIONARY horse to turn 180 degrees?

I recently have been interested in horses and a friend and I were arguing non-stop about this subject.

Sorry if this is the wrong place to post.

That's kind of like asking "how fast can a bird fly". It would depend on the bird. If a horse is really putting some effort into it either because they are scared or they are very well trained a horse can change direction 180 degrees at least as fast as you can.

comparing how fast a horse can turn to how fast a bird can fly? thats just stupid. sorry but your comparison is not realistic at all. Thanks for the reply though.

I think the point was that different animals have different responses/speeds. That was a valid point to draw. Some horses will/can turn faster than others depending on all kinds of variables.

It wasn't a comparison, it was an analogy. He said your question was like asking how fast a bird can fly.

Your question was pretty stupid. Do you think that a Clydesdale that stands 18 hands and weighs 1900 lbs turns at the same speed as a 14.2 quarter horse that is trained as a reiner. Use your head before you use your keyboard and you won't sound as ridiculous.

 HORSEnoob 05-15-2010 05:54 PM

From my name I thought it was clear I dont know anything about horses... but good luck on your clydesdales vs 14.2 quarter horse dilemma, I hope you find out the answer your looking for..

My question is not stupid at all. Its not my fault that your trying to turn a VERY basic question into something difficult, but I will re-word the question anyway "How long would it take AN AVERAGE SIZE horse to do a 180 degree turn?"

If you just simply can't answer the question, then there should be no need to speak.

Or maybe your just following the common trend of picking on the outsider?

As already stated, it's going to depend on a lot of variables. Not every 14.2 hh quarter horse (using Kevin's as an example) is going to turn at the same speed.....all the responses you have gotten have answered your question.

 kevinshorses 05-15-2010 05:58 PM

3.2 seconds is how long it takes. Now can you stop being so nasty? I tried to answer as best I could and you called it stupid so I really don't feel bad that you think I was picking on you. If it wouldn't be bad manners and get me banned from this forum I would tell you what I really think of you and suggest some activities.

I think the question is weird and Kevins answer is a great response. I would like to say that I was riding a QH TB x one day, he saw something ahead that spooked him. He turned back the way we had come, fully 180 degrees, SO Fast I didn't have time to fall off!! By the time I realised what had happened we were 30 yards heading back the way we had came. When I got home the inside of my thigh was seriously bruised and painful from the centrifical forces created by the speed of my horses spin - I have no idea how fast he moved but let me assure you that under the right circumstances a horse can spin 180 degrees Really, REALLY fast!!
