Goat people, I need your advice!
So I got a new goat to go along with my Buddy goat. He was super lonely and needed a friend so we introduced Patrick, a Nigerian Dwarf/Alpine cross who was born on St. Patrick's day (you do the math on how old he is).
When we got him, he had his horns banded at the base so that they would fall off. Yesterday, I saw that he was bleeding from one of his horns and it was kind of lop sided. It wasn't a lot of blood, just a trickle. Today, I went out and the horn had fallen off. But, there was a little nubbin' left. Is this normal or do I need to contact the breeder about taking the nubbin' off?
His other horn has not fallen off yet but it will soon, it looks like.
Here is a recent pic of him. you can see the bands on the horns. The left one (on the right in the pic) is the one that has fallen off already.
Ehh, I don't like banding. If you want their horns gone, then disbud them. IMHO. I know it's not your fault. There are blood vessels flowing throw the horns.. There for it may bleed a little..I'm not big on this.. I have horned goats.. His horns will probably grow into nubs.. Since it didn't kill the horn's tissue/(whatever), so it may grow back deformed. Just watch & make sure you keep him happy, this can be awful traumatic..
he doesn't seem to be bothered by it... at all.
I'm hoping they'll just be little nubbin's :D
Awe, cute little guy! He should be fine, but they may grow back. If you really want them gone, contact the vet and have him disbudded, as the other poster suggested.
I don't think they did the banding correctly. Here's a web page that shows the right way to do it.

The bands on your little guy seem a little high.

They were lower when we got him, but as his horns grew, the bands went with them. The breeder told us it would be fine... but maybe not :/
Not so concerned about his horns growing back. My other goat is not aggressive and though he has horns he doesn't have any clue on how to use them.
I just REALLY don't want them to grow back deformed. But I really don't mind if they do grow back. If I had bred him, I probably wouldn't have even taken his horns off.
