How long do sprains/strains last?
About how long does it take a sprain/strained muscle to heal?
It's a really small one on her ankle type area on her front leg. She either has a small small sprain, or pulled a muscle somewhere. She barely moves lame, just slightly off. Yesterday we were stopping in new dirt, and when we stop we think she twisted it funny because she walked out head bobbing lame. Then today it was barely noticeable but its there, and we noticed swelling and puffyness.
We're going to cold hose it of course, she's on bute and stall rest for now.
How much will wrapping help if its small? It's going to be really hot (our first heat wave) out so I really don't want to make her more uncomfortable than she needs to be.
Depending on how strenuously you plan on working the horse, how competitive you are and how much the horse is worth, it depends.
Some people would do ultrasounds and X-rays and then depending on the severity rest the horse for a few months or more. Some people may rest the horse for a few weeks and resume its work schedule.
Definitely call your vet and have them out immediately to discuss prognosis and long term treatment, but you are treating it correctly now.
Thanks for the info. The vet should be out Saturday (she's coming out then anyways)
I really think its a mild strain/pull. She's 95% sound right now, you can barely notice it unless you really look. We'll see, we're planning on giving her the weekend off then taking her out Monday and seeing how she looks then.
When our mares have had sprains, they take 3-5 days and we usually give them an extra week off to make sure they don't re-injure it. Cold hosing/ice the first two days and a day or two of stall rest. Bute only if they are very uncomfortable. Only in really bad sprains (hobbling) have we wrapped.
I think I'm going to leave it unwrapped, because first off I don't think its a bad sprain, and secondly its supposed to be VERY hot, and I don't want it to get hot under a wrap because I feel like that'll do more damage.
Hopefully the cold hosing will help her a lot.
I'm glad she's at least moving relatively sound, so we'll keep her on stall rest until Monday and then see what we have.
If we do take her to the show with us when we leave Wednesday I'll definitely be cold hosing it a few times a day even if there is no swelling.
