scared of a bath & sponge.

Hi, I have had several horses in my life, they all took a bath with a water hose well. I've never had one that was scared of the water. I am assuming that if I carefully and slowly wet him and clean him he will EVENTUALLY get better. Any good ideas on making it easier for him and me?
I also have always tied a string to a sponge and when we were in the water I would throw it down to the water and soak the sponge. Then pull it up to help cool necks/butts. I have never had a horse (4 different ones) spook at the sponge, in fact I never even thought about it. UNTIL... Saturday I threw the sponge down and about came off from the spook. The horse thought it must be the creature from the black lagoon coming to get him. Any ideas to get him use to that other than keep throwing it in the water.

I'm no help as far as the sponge goes. But for the bath, try it when he's hot. Turn your water on to about half the pressure, stand back and start with the hind legs. Start at the hoof and work your way up the leg. Move to the front leg and repeat. Move the hose up to his butt so it let's water run down his sides, then slide the hose forward slowly.

You can get him to like bath time, but it might take a while. If he likes to be rubbed on, wet him down and shampoo him, making sure you give a thorough massage while you're at it.

Make sure he is good and use to being hosed before you shampoo him. I had a mini who acted fine at first so i threw on the soap. Suddenly baths where scary and I had a year and a half miniature stallion rearing up and screaming and flailing at the water I tried to rinse him with.

Really? That only was an issue for me with horses that don't love being rubbed down, which most of mine do.

Oh he loved the rubbing and shampoo... It was using the hose to rinse him off that was the problem :P

LOL, now that I can believe. I remember a girl I used to show with had to rinse her horse using buckets. Now doesn't that sound fun???

I tried that but he freaked out it was adorable because he is like 2 1/2 feet high but he did the movie stallion scene. Reared up, thrashed the air with his front hooves, threw his head from side to side and screamed. He landed puffing and panting, eyes ablaze with anger at the fact that I would DARE to make him wet. And a bit impressed with himself and his own ferocious act only to have me squeal and grab his halter and plant a kiss on his nose while cooing, "That was SO so so so so CUTE!!!!" He was so disgusted with me he just huffed out the huge breath he was holding and hung his head in embarrassment.
