hold your reins?
So me and my friends were riding today and we got on the subject of falling off your horse and whether we held on to the reins or not. Well honestly i don't and one of my other friends doesn't but then one of them does. So i decided i wanted to see peoples thoughts on holding on to the reins when you fall off your horse.
Here's my thought honestly i think that holding on to the reins when you fall off is idiotic. I just think its a way to get yourself killed. So i believe in just letting go of the reins and getting out of the way. You'll get your horse back eventually.
So thats my opinion whats yours?
When I'm in a warmup ring and (yes it does happen :P) fall off, yes I like to hold on if I can. Generally the horse will pull back from the puressure, not run you over.
Other than that... you REALLY don't want to let go while you're out doing xcountry... or you could be going for a hike.
Most of the time though it's not really a choice for me haha I generally forget about my reins and really try to concentrate on landing in a way that won't hurt :P
but doesn't your horse stand and wait for you? My horse does and even if he did run away heck if i care that he walks off as long as i have my limbs and life i'm fine.
I just don't want to take the chance of my horse taking off in a warmup ring. If something's spooked it that's led to my fall, then no, they won't stop. And on the Xcountry course my horses are usually too wound up from hand-galloping and jumping to just stop. Plus there's all that room to run :P
I found that (when I managed to hold on to my reins) they would back a few steps then stop. They weren't at all likely to run me over. And if they looked like they were going to be more harmful with me holding on, then I'd let go.
Well i guess that would be different being you probably know your horse better. lol me i can see my horse stepping all over me trying to get off at the same time and not knowing where i was at like an idiot lol.
I think everytime I have fallen off I let go of the reins. Last time Vida was starting to come over on top of me so I definitly let go. Thats the one I busted my back up on so I didn't care if she ran off or not although she didn't. It would have been better to have her run home on her own then having to have my husband get her and his horse both home with me laying out in the field waiting
aww i feel so bad for you.
yea i understand what your talking about. I used to gallop full blast on my horse and just have fun but one day i was just loping him and he nearly flipped over i'm guessing his knees gave out on him. I almost flew off his back. I didn't get hurt and neither did he but my confidence went down. Now every single time i run i think about what if his knee gives out and i flip. I feel like it was luck that he kept himself up and i am slowly going away from that i guess. I galloped him four times today and still i think about that one time that happened at the beginning of the school year.
Thats what we were doing when I fell, just having a blast blazing across a hay field. It wasn't anything she did. just she zigged and I zagged. I haven't gotten the courage to gallop yet although we did do a little lope today and it was ok but I'm still not where I was yet. It did get me to buy a helmet and I don't care how silly they look I won't ride without one anymore.
