Elder Horse Coughing?
My mid thirties horse is in really great shape for his age but he is recently coughing quite a bit. :? Usually it is just random but it happens nearly all the time when he is exercising. Not sure what to do about this or if there is anything I can do. Any ideas? Thank you!

Could be dust. My 12 year old coughs sometimes when he's eating, and he has really dusty rice bran. I've never had him cough while eating hay or exercising, but a lot of older horses are susceptible to that stuff. Try wetting down her hay while she eats and maybe wetting her feed.

My 28yo has started this too....I'll be watching what advice you get as I was going to post with similar issues! I like the idea of wetting his hay and I'll prob spray the arena before lessons....

If changing the environment doesn't work you might try simply adding MSM to their daily meal. This is what I give to my Shetland who developed an allergy to something out in the back pasture last years which led to him having Heaves. He does great on it as long as I don't overexpose him to the allergen. It wont' hurt the older horses at all and is great for their joints as well. It is a simple anti inflammatory which can be fed at at least twice the recommended dose as needed.
