circle in, circle out?

I've heard a few different opinions on hunters at the local level, so here's what I'm asking.
The course should look like this
circle to pick up canter into the course
course is about control, movement, stride length, corners, etc.
come off the course, circle to trot, walk out of the arena.

Am I right? Mostly on the enter/exit, but if I've got the 'course' totally wrong, please correct me. :-P

the only time i dont do a circle at the beginning is if the first jump is at the far end of the arena

Yesterday, the first jump was at the far end of the arena from the gate, but so was the judge, and we were instructed to circle infront of the judge, that's typical, yes?

It really doesn't matter where your circle is. All the circle does is give the judge a second to organize her cards and prepare for your round. Like someone said above you don't even have to circle if your first jump is on the other end of the ring, or if you have a long approach. On some green horses I'll even just cut across the diagonal (lets them see more of the ring w/o wasting the judge's time by meandering around) instead of making a circle.

How was it??

Very well!
The thing about her is, in her prime, she was a national champ... she's been off for three years, but she carried me over the course like it was a walk in the park, get her back in shape and I can only imagine how well she'd do.
In the 2'3 division we took first.

That's how it went, because I feel like sharing. =P
