I recently posted about the 6year old my parents purchased me for dressage. We worked alot on her over tracking and are now ready to move on to bigger nad better things.
Iv never trained a horse thats solidly for dressage(actually dont think iv ever sat on a pure dressage horse) so i would love to know what do you work on to develop all the correct muscles.
I know its not to far frim riding an eventer but i also think i need some kind of guidelines or exercises to work to.
There is no pure dressage instructers around me to use at this point so alot of work will be done alone or with slight help from my eventing instructer.
When working with a younger horse (even if you have a few years of dressage experience under your belt) it is absolutely essential to have a dressage coach. It is very easy to teach them bad habits, and is going to be extremely difficult to move up the levels without having a knowledgeable coach on the ground and that can get up in the saddle to teach the horse.
As a rider, it is very difficult to teach the horse things that we ourselves do not know, which is where the coach comes in.
Tell it to your parents like they've spent all the money on a horse, now in order to keep its value up they need to invest in training it properly. Although there are no coaches in your area, I am sure there are regular dressage clinicians that come to your area every 4-8weeks. Try to get into these regular clinics and just use your eventing coach for lessons "in between". Also try to have your eventing coach attend and watch your dressage lessons to keep the teaching consistent.
As dressage is a big part of eventing I am sure your eventing trainer will be able to assist you with the basics of dressage :) Always good to have someone on the ground :)
Iv never looked into dressage clinics as i live in the west of ireland im not sure they are a regular occurance but i will definitley try to find out if there are any coming up.
At the moment my eventing instructer can help me but i would rather the expertise and thrive for precision that pure dressage instructers have. Eventing at the lower levels are nowhere near as precise in dressage as they should be.
anabel- would learning classical seat myself improve my horses going??
Im sorry if i sound stupid but i never realised what a different ball game eventing dressage is to real dressage. I do want to develop correct muscles and way of going in her that would enable her to carry up through the levels be it with or without me. I dont want to be responsible for destroying her potential
If you can find a really good book that will give you some guidelines you may find that helpful to read to get an understanding of the theory and goals of dressage.
To put those guidelines into practice will require a good instructor or a very very disciplined and determined, focused mind.
I was looking at sylvia (cant remember her full name) the classical seat. Would that be worth practicing or should i get an actual detailed dressage movement book? I have as much time to work on this horse as i like because i took on a pony rider for all but two horses so i can totally focus on working both of these.
Was it Sylvia Loch?
Ooo yes thats her name thabk you very much dressagexlee! Have you used her theory iv heard mixed reviews on the internet from it but i dont want to waste my time if its not worth my while.
I've never read her books. The only horse books we do get around here are only about showjumping. Oi.
But from what I've seen in videos, she's a great example of a classically-trained rider.
Remember, you don't have to go only with what one trainer says - it's always better to have a huge library of knowledge so that you can help each horse understand in a way that works for him!
O yes i fully agree with that but she discusses working on the classical dressage seat but im not sure that many actual dressage riders fully use the classical seat?
But i would like to learn alot mores o im going to toddle off to my library and check out all dressage books. i also got a magazine yesterday that does step by step lateral work which should be helpful!
