What would you do in my situation?
I don't know what to do. Keep my mouth shut or piss her off?
I have a friend who is quite the BYB. And not just with horses. Dogs, cats, chickens, sheep. She just makes a ton of babies. And honestly, they do NOT have the means to care for any of it. All their animals were thin, the dogs were tied and/or crated 24/7. They ended up with an adorable Sharpey [spelling?] puppy, and when it grew up a bit [not much, she was only maybe 1.5 years old] they bred it to a mutt of a huge black dog they had. I saw her once and she was nothing but skin and bones. Their excuse was that the puppies were sucking the life out of her. The next time I went over, I asked where she was, and she DIED because they forgot to bring her in for the night [to her crate] in the dead of winter. O_O
They usually had several horses, and then my friend came across an Appy stud, so guess what that meant? Lots and LOTS of babies. Eventually, her mom said "screw it all" and they sold everything but the dogs. A few months later, she spent $300 on an Aussie puppy because she was "depressed" from losing her horses. The puppy is now 9 months old and still not spayed because she doesn't know if she wants to breed her or not. O_O
Recently, my friend got her mare back. She keeps her at another friends house for free, she doesn't have a job, I have no idea how she's paying for this horse, and lately she's been talking to me about breeding her Arab mare [not registered] to a Trak, but now wants to breed to a Haflinger. To which I say, "That should be interesting." She says, "Not really. Haflingers descended from Arabs." Is that true? I highly doubt it, Haffies are so drafty, how could they descend from an Arab? But I don't know, maybe it's true.
But I don't know what to do. I wish that I had called Animal Control when all this started, when Honey was skin and bones and had a litter to feed. But I was younger and stupid then, in denial, turned a blind eye, that sort of thing. And now there is nothing to call about, because she hasn't had time to starve her mare yet [they get fed, just not much, or well] and Animal Control won't care that one dog is tied to a tree in the yard 24/7 and the other is kept in a crate with a blanket over it 24/7 because they have food and water.
I COULD try and talk to her, but she wouldn't listen, and she'd just get pissed and stop talking to me, it wouldn't change anything, and she wouldn't change her mind. I'd like to stick around solely so I CAN call Animal Control when it gets to that point. But then I'm being a two-faced not-really-your-friend kind of person and I don't want to be like that. But I don't want to ignore something so terrible. She means well, she loves her animals, but it's like those crazy old women who get fifty cats and dogs removed from her house because she can't care for them.
Sorry this is so long, I just wanted to make sure you could grasp the whole situation, But what would you do?
No idea what to do here--quite the situation to be in. I'll think on it, and best of luck! Things like that are inexcusable.

I know. =| Nothing has happened yet, just the fairly typical ignorance concerning running martingales, which I suppose I can handle. But when it comes to the actual health of an animal, I can't just play nice.
As soon as the problem starts up again, call the animal control and ask to remain anonymous. So long as the animals are in good weight and living in decent conditions you can't do anything. But if they are currently all underweight and currently all living in crates 24/7 then you could call Animal Control and tell them what happened before, and then tell them you're worried now.
If the problem has subsided a little, don't worry about it too much. But when and if it flares again, be ready to jump on it.
Ricci, all calls to AC are anonymous, so if you see the animals starting to look like death warmed over, call them.
AC can't do anything or even get the ball rolling, unless they have help from concerned citizens.
I'd be hesitant to call someone like that a 'friend'. We are known and judged by the company we keep.
Someone like that needs to be turned in so her animals won't continue to suffer.
I would say by not turning her in, you are enabling her to continue to do it, but I know you are trying to be a friend instead of the caretaker of her animals since she doesn't do it.
Wait until it happens again, then call animal control. Make sure you have plenty of evidence, not just dogs in crates, etc. Take photos if you can.

I am in COMEPLETE agree. Just call animal control(your local phonebook prbably has it) and call them, they will get the animals into good homes.
Until then hon, Start up a conversation like
Did you hear about the 50 some dogs that were found starved to death? Yea, thier owner never feed them because she was poor and didn't have enogh money to fix them so they all bred each other. and starved.
Mabye this will spark up her interest and make her see that it's not right.
Hope i helped you in some way!
To Electrichearts, I doubt a Pitty story like that would have an effect. I assume that those that do BYB always think that they know what they were doing.
Else they would definitely not keep breeding!
All you can do is stick around and call AC when you have the chance and evidence! :(
I can definitely get pictures of her horse. "Oh yeah, I'll take pictures of you riding." I'm willing to be that two-faced, not-really-your-friend kind of person if I have to be. If she's not going to take care of her animals, I'm willing to do what I can for them. I just want to know if anyone else can come up with a different kind of solution.
I'll also try to throw in some of those "did you hear?" stories. Even if she may not say anything to me, it may get her thinking. She's smart, just an idiot, if that makes sense. o_O
Oy vei, this is all too much. I may be dirt poor and live off Top Ramen, but my horses and cat and rabbit have everything they need and more. I just don't understand how people can do this...
I know. At my house we turn on the A/C about once a year, otherwise we use natural air conditioning, but my horses are all fat, wormed, with good grass and good quality hay and well-fitting tack.
