The Term Cowboy
Hey yall, Well i was just wonderin somethin.. Ok well i was born in edmond but pretty much raised out at my grandma's up near guthrie. My hole family has been farmers and or have raised horses but sadly i have not had hands on experience with horses and i have only ridin once. The reason i have not had the opportunity to ride and other stuff is because my family kinda moved in town and just went for the simple life, but i have always loved horses, they way they moved and just the size of them... my step dads parents had animals and when i would To Welston i would feed them and stuff. I grew up with the western atmosphere and clothes, and i wear western style clothing, boots, and belt buckle and my hat. People at school call me "Cowboy", and my question is am i a Cowboy?... I am learnin how to ride again now, and gettin experience because in about a year i will have my own horse because one of my uncles customers is givin him a horse, so he is goin to give it to me..
If i aint a cowboy then it don't bother me, i will still dress the same and persue my dream of ownin my own horse and competin with him.
Oh and another reason I don't have a horse is because my family has always been poor, and even tho me, my mom and sis live in edmond my mom struggles to pay the rent.. I want a horse so badly and i want to persue my grow desire to ride horses and compete and just all this stuff but its just so hard...
Technically the definition of cowboy is someone who works on a farm, and handles cattle. A wrangler is someone specifically working with horses.
I think the term cowboy is not only a way of living, but has to be felt in the heart. I live the city, and wear makeup and normal clothes, but I have gotten dirty with the best of em and i blast my country music and always have even when people made fun of it because it wasn't 'cool' and some of my best memories are of my dad being a cowboy, but he NEVER lived on a farm, so YES i consider myself a cowgirl. It has to be felt with the heart. It has to be part of your soul.....IMO. 8)
I would say YES you are a cowboy hehe
Ya I LOVE country music, its the only music i can lose myself and really relax. Everyone at my school thinks country is for i quess weird people, seems astho people nowa days listen to that gangster rap and or the emo music. I get made fun of abit but it dont bother me, i am proud of who i am and how i dress..
yup i agree! i live in the city now and having horses in the city is a different ball game to being in the country but, i love my boots, my riding pants and my country music (especially garth brooks :)). i still consider myself a cowgirl cause thats where my heart is :) how does the saying go...you can take the girl out of the country but you cant take the country out of the girl...or something like that anways :)
Since the true cowboy is a dying breed I think it has become more of a way of thinking more so then even the way you dress, the music you listen to or where you live. I like the way Gene Autry put it in the Cowboy Code
1. The Cowboy must never shoot first, hit a smaller man, or take unfair advantage.
2. He must never go back on his word, or a trust confided in him.
3. He must always tell the truth.
4. He must be gentle with children, the elderly, and animals.
5. He must not advocate or possess racially or religiously intolerant ideas.
6. He must help people in distress.
7. He must be a good worker.
8. He must keep himself clean in thought, speech, action, and personal habits.
9. He must respect women, parents, and his nation's laws.
10. The Cowboy is a patriot.
My husband was a city dude turned horseman but he lives the cowboy code more than anyone else I know.
ooh i like that one ^^^^
Agreed. I think the cowboy code should be something that comes natural and not something that you have to make yourself follow or continue to remind yourself to follow. It's like an unwritten/unspoken code.
I didnt know there where like cowboy Code, the stuff of on that list is stuff i was taught growin up, and i thought everyone pretty much followed that code.
but i would like to add some to that list:
11. Takes his hat off at the table.
12. never hits a lady
13. Defends his girl, friends, and family no matter what.
14. holds the door for a lady
There is others on my list just cant think of anythin right now.
nice ^^^
hehehe i didnt know there was a 'code' either, but i suppose it definately makes sense!
