Mixed Feelings About a Certain Horse...
I board and ride at a lovely lesson barn. We get a lot of our school (or lesson) horses at auctions. Last week at an auction, my trainer stumbled upon a GIANT percheron cross... and he is absolutely gorgeous! We named him Chance, because we're giving him a second chance. He is about 500 pounds underweight, and has severely cracked feet, and has gone lame twice this week.

Well, I know it's going to take him a while to fully recover, and I know that my barn is doing it's best to take care of him and get him back into shape, but I'm not sure if a lesson barn is the right place for him. I really want to help him in every way possible, because he is so sweet and forgiving. He isn't in lessons yet, and the farrier should be out soon.

Do you think he could make it in a lesson barn? Is it an okay place for him?

No one will really know how well he is going to do with giving lessons until he is back to full health and capable of being ridden. So long as he does well around kids, and isn't overly energetic or spooky, he ought to do all right, but he might have to have some extra schooling himself before hand.

When I was younger (and still now) I loved riding giant drafts simply because I felt like I was on top of the world, which was an automatic confidence booster. I'm sure kids who have developed the basics on smaller horses would love the chance to take a ride on Chance. :)

Even if he doesn't do well giving lessons, perhaps there is another option for him, like a trail horse or maybe he could trained in tougher levels of dressage for when the rider is ready to begin doing something harder.
