Sliding stops?
This may seem like a stupid question, but aside from being a Western trail rider, all my technical coaching has been English (jumping & Dressage).

How do you teach a sliding stop? Is it feasible to be something I could do on my own, or would I be best getting a trainer to show me?

I ask because Jynx is set up perfect to learn them - she darn near does them already! In a snaffle bit, on a loose rein, I can sit and say woah and she will slam the brakes to a halt from any gait (by adding gentle leg pressure, I can control that woah into a descent to the next gait as well, not just a halt).

How much farther would I have to go to get her haunches under herself and sliding a bit? Am I dreaming if I think I can teach her this when I've never even ridden a sliding stop before?

I think the best thing to do would be to get a trainer. That way, they can see what she is doing and what you are doing and give you real-time pointers.

A sliding stop is a little more complicated than just stopping. The horse must stop with the back end but keep the front legs going so that the slide can happen. I have never bothered much with that. As cool as a slide looks, when I ask my horse to stop I want it to STOP not slide.

^ Good point. I haven't yet decided what discipline I'd like to do with Jynx, so if reining happens to be it, maybe I'll just wait and then hire a proper trainer/coach instead of funking with her already good stop.
