Fly Control

We have had a terrible increase in horse and yellow fly population this year. For years we only encountered a couple all year long. Does anyone know anything we can use on the horses to help deter these things from biting? I read some home remedy recipes and some of them showed their mixture using citronella oil. Is this the same oil put in tiki torches that you light on fire:shock:? Everything I have read about says I am pretty much out of luck when it comes to horse flies. Thanks for any advice.

I put a cup of apple cider vinegar in my water troughs... and a 1/4 cup in each feeding (i feed 2x a day). And it helps alot. I have two horses that are allergice to flys and it helps. Then on top of that... I spray them with fly spray every evening. 3x a week I do one called ultra shield, then the days in between I just do cheap bronco. And so far I have no welts or hives like I normally do. And we horse flies galore. Cant even go out on trails right now... or you will be eaten alive. (lol)

Have you tried Pyranha Fly spay ? Best I have used, and last all day.

thanks

I will look into the apple cider vinegar. I read some people using that, but, have never heard any reviews on it. These darn horse flies ignore the ultra shield. I have been trying a Skin-so-Soft remedy with a little success. Horse flies, for the most part, ignore that also. Thanks

I will try and order some of the Pyranha Fly Spray. I am willing to try anything at this point.

:DThanks for the leads.

The Pyranha stuff works well to. I dont use it because its oil based... and my 2 horses who have allergies break out to it. But it does work awesome on my other gelding and my mini.
But I have noticed a tremendous difference since I started the Vinegar. And I wasnt sure how my horses would eat it... but they love it.

I find the Pyranha in the aerosol can works better than the spray bottle.

I have very little problem with flies between the fly predators and the biting fly trap. The Pyranha or deep woods off covers me on trail rides.

Looks like I will be stopping after work to get some apple cider vinegar and Pyranha. Thank you both for the recommendations.
